Intel Web TV box coming this year with live TV streaming ability

Late last year, we learned Intel was seeking content deals for its Web TV service, but aside from that, details were scant. Since then , new information has surfaced that indicates Intel is on track to release its media streamer this year, and it will offer services few of its competitors currently match.  The Wall Street Journal has reported that, at yesterday’s D: Dive Into Media conference, Corporate VP of Intel Media, Erik Huggers, told the audience that Intel Web TV would arrive by year’s end.

The service will purportedly offer a cache of previously aired content (as per industry standard), but will also feature the holy grail of over-the-top set-top box features: Live TV.

Can we officially call this a gold rush now?

The TV ring is overflowing with the fedoras, sombreros, and stetsons of a host of power players, but Intel’s ambitions seem lofty even amongst such esteemed company. Its goal is to “build the best internet television service ever,” says Huggers, who seemed comfortable fixing expectations squarely in the stratosphere.

Apparently Intel poached employees from Apple, Netflix and Google in pursuit of that end – not a bad collection of wells to draw from. Intel will need the…well, intel, as this market is already very competitive, even in its infancy. In order to come out swinging, Intel will need to offer something truly revolutionary. It looks as if that may be exactly what it has up its sleeve.

Hulu + Live TV comes to Sony PlayStation 4, giving folks another option to PSVue
Someone relaxing on a couch watching Hulu.

On January 30, Sony closed the doors on its Playstation Vue, which for several years was the only live-TV streaming option for owners of Sony's PlayStation 4 and 4 Pro gaming consoles. YouTube TV was the first service to fill the void left by PSVue's demise, but now PlayStation owners have a second choice and it's bound to be a popular one: Hulu + Live TV is now available on PS4.

"Current PlayStation 4 users who already have Hulu can easily switch to Hulu + Live TV through their account settings on Hulu.com. Viewers who are already subscribed to Hulu + Live TV will also now be able to access and watch live channels through the Hulu app on PlayStation 4," said a Hulu press release.

Redbox launches a free, ad-supported live TV streaming service
Redbox DVD rentals.

Redbox, the company best known for its red movie rental kiosks, has launched a free, ad-supported live TV streaming service called Redbox Free Live TV. Available on a limited basis at the moment, you can watch the live streaming service on Apple's iOS devices and Android device and is compatible with AirPlay casting to devices like Apple TV.

In a statement provided to TechCrunch, Redbox said:
Redbox is always exploring ways to bring more content and value to consumers. We’ve begun offering free live streaming movies and TV to a subset of consumers via our website and mobile app, with plans to roll it on more devices in the coming days and weeks. Redbox believes that the future of entertainment is dynamic and consists of the right mix of live and video content, and that’s why we’re building this new ecosystem of free content. The offering complements our new-release kiosk and On-Demand offering with ad-supported catalog content, driving new entertainment occasions, while also providing new ways for Redbox to promote the brand outside of our network.
Redbox Free Live TV doesn't provide any major broadcasters and has more in common with free on-demand services like the Roku Channel and Plex's recently launched ad-supported streaming video service. Content plays "live," which means that you join streams in progress instead of starting them from scratch.

Sony’s PlayStation Vue live TV streaming service shuts down in January
hbo cinemax come to playstation vue now on ps4 ps3 1

PlayStation Vue, Sony's internet-based live TV streaming service, is about to be no more. According to a statement from Sony, PlayStation Vue will shut down on January 30, 2020, ending an almost four-year run.

Sony says its decision to end PlayStation Vue is based on "expensive content and network deals," a marketplace that's been slow to adapt to the rise of live TV streaming, and a desire to focus more on Sony's "core gaming business." PlayStation Vue's closure comes as Sony is prepping for the release of the PlayStation 5, which is expected to arrive in time for the 2020 holiday season.
