JBL reveals its new flagship soundbar at CES 2023: 15 channels and 1170W of Dolby Atmos power

JBL has taken the wraps off its most powerful Dolby Atmos soundbar to date at CES 2023. The Bar 1300X follows the same design principles as the company’s previous top-of-the-line Bar series soundbars, including the line’s signature detachable, fully wireless surround speaker modules, and a wireless subwoofer. But the Bar 1300X brings even more sound and power to your TV room, with an 11.1.4-channel configuration and a massive 1,170 watts of total power. It will be available on February 19, 2023, for $1,700.

The JBL Bar 1300X boasts both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X compatibility, but what sets it apart from JBL’s other Atmos/DTS:X soundbars is its six dedicated up-firing drivers, which will presumably do a better job of delivering the height channel effects that these 3D surround sound formats are known for. It also has the largest wireless subwoofer in the Bar range, with a 12-inch driver.

JBL says that dialog clarity is a special strength of the Bar 1300X, thanks to Harman’s PureVoice technology, which is designed to keep voices clear, even when background sounds get loud.

The detachable speakers have their own internal rechargeable batteries, which gives you the option of placing them almost anywhere you can find a flat surface (they can also be wall-mounted). The included AC adapters give you the option of using them like powered wireless speakers, or you can dock them to the ends of the Bar 1300X, where they will boost the power of the man soundbar while they recharge.

Also new for 2023 is the JBL One app. It gives you control over customized EQ settings and lets you stream music via Wi-Fi to JBL’s soundbars from the app’s collection of integrated streaming music services. The Bar 1300X also has a variety of other streaming connection options including Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, and Chromecast Built-in. It’s compatible with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Apple’s Siri, and can be controlled as part of a multiroom system via the Alexa app.

The Bar 1300X joins JBL’s other Bar series soundbars for 2023:

  • JBL Bar 1000, $1,200: 7.1.4, 880 watts, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, detachable speakers
  • JBL Bar 700, $900: 5.1.2, 620 watts, Dolby Atmos, detachable speakers
  • JBL Bar 500, $600: 5.1, 590 watts, Dolby Atmos
  • JBL Bar 300, $400: 5.0, 260 watts, Dolby Atmos

Bose’s new flagship Dolby Atmos soundbar brings AI smarts to the dialogue problem
Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar in white.

Bose has launched its latest flagship Dolby Atmos soundbar -- the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar -- which looks identical to its predecessor, the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 (which it replaces), and even carries that same price at $899. However, Bose says that the Ultra model has a new AI-driven dialogue mode that uses machine learning to make spoken words easier to hear. The new speaker is available on Bose.com starting September 21.

"Ultra" seems to be the new hotness at Bose right now. Earlier this month, the company launched its new earbuds and headphones -- the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds and the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones, with Bose's immersive audio tech as the headliner update for both products.

Sennheiser’s Ambeo Soundbar Mini is a pricey, bedroom-sized Dolby Atmos speaker
Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Mini.

Sennheiser has shrunk its impressive Ambeo surround sound technology into its smallest speaker yet with the newly announced Ambeo Soundbar Mini. It looks just like a smaller version of the excellent Ambeo Soundbar Plus, with a footprint that's nearly identical to the Sonos Beam Gen 2 and the Bose Smart Soundbar 600. But at $800, it's considerably more expensive than either of those Dolby Atmos soundbars. The Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Mini will be available starting September 1 at sennheiser-hearing.com and select retailers.

Samsung adds HW-Q900C to its lineup of 2023 Dolby Atmos soundbars
Samsung 2023 Soundbars.

Samsung has been pretty quiet about its 2023 lineup of Dolby Atmos soundbars since it announced the new collection back at CES 2023, but we finally have all of the models, prices, and features. As we already knew, the latest flagship is the HW-Q990C, a monster 22-driver, 11.1.4-channel system that carries forward the legacy of the HW-Q990B from 2022 -- a soundbar that deeply impressed our reviewer. However, it's now joined by the HW-Q900C -- a more affordable version for folks who don't need the 990C's surround speakers, but who nonetheless may want to add them at a later date.

Also new to the collection are two C-Series models that bring the price of better TV sound down to $200 or less. Here's the full lineup.
Samsung Q-Series Dolby Atmos soundbars
In addition to Dolby Atmos compatibility, Samsung's Q-Series soundbars feature Q-Symphony, a feature that lets a compatible Samsung TV enhance the soundbar's own performance through the use of the TV's built-in speakers. Version 3.0 of Q-Symphony also uses the TV’s sound algorithms to analyze each scene to match the TV and soundbar outputs.
