The Last of the Mohicans series heads to HBO Max with Watchmen director attached

Paramount Television’s The Last of the Mohicans series reboot, based on James Fenimore Cooper’s classic historic novel, has landed at HBO Max.

WarnerMedia’s forthcoming streaming service — set to launch in May — has handed out a script order for the TV series. The series will be written by Emmy winner Cary Joji Fukunaga (True Detective) and Nick Osborne (All About Steve) and has Nicole Kassell of Watchmen fame on board to direct.

The new take of the classic French and Indian War novel is described as a retelling that focuses on the unlikely romance between Uncas, a young Mohican, and Cora, the mixed-race daughter of a British colonel.

The project was first put into development in April by Paramount Television, for which Fukunaga has also executive produced the Netflix limited series Maniac and TNT’s The Alienist. Fukunaga, Osborne, and Kassell will executive produce alongside Alex Goldstone (Welcome to the Jungle), Bard Dorros (Collateral Beauty), and Michael Sugar (Spotlight, Maniac).

Kassell garnered critical praise for her work on Damon Lindelof’s HBO drama Watchmen after working with the showrunner on The Leftovers, also for HBO. She has also directed episodes of Claws, Westworld, Better Call Saul, Rectify, Castle Rock and American Crime.

The Last of the Mohicans is no stranger to screen adaptation. The HBO Max project is just the latest in a long run of TV and film adaptations. The 1920 feature is considered a “culturally significant” take by the Library of Congress and is included on the U.S. National Film Registry. The novel was also made into a 1971 BBC series and a 1992 feature film starring Daniel Day-Lewis. FX also previously developed the novel but did not move forward with the project.

HBO Max is set to launch in May with a roster of classic programming from WarnerMedia’s portfolio (including Friends and The Big Bang Theory) and scripted originals that continues to get more intriguing. The Last of the Mohicans joins Grease: Rydell High, the Cristin Milioti-led comedy Made for Love, and the limited series Station Eleven, starring Mackenzie Davis are all in the original content pipeline. The service will cost $15 a month.

Viola Davis may headline HBO Max’s Peacemaker spinoff series

Earlier this year, Peacemaker was such a big hit for HBO Max that it earned an early second season renewal. Now, the Peacemaker spinoff series is coming into focus. If Davis signs on, she will reprise her role as Amanda Waller from The Suicide Squad films.

In the DC Expanded Universe, Waller is the head of Task Force X, a secret government program that blackmails supervillains into going on suicide missions for their nation. That's where the Suicide Squad nickname comes from. Waller has also demonstrated a ruthless streak in the films, and a willingness to murder her operatives if they disobey her orders in the field. She's not an easy character to like, but Waller isn't evil. Instead, she's amoral, and she doesn't feel the need to adhere to any heroic ideals because she never claimed to be a hero.

Charlize Theron will produce an Aqualad series for HBO Max

When Charlize Theron signed a first-look development deal with HBO Max in 2020, it's a safe bet that no one was expecting a comic book adaptation to come out of that contract. Regardless, Variety broke the story that Theron is slated to executive produce an Aqualad live-action series for HBO Max. And the things that make this project unique may be exactly the reason why Theron took it on.

The series is an adaptation of an out-of-continuity LGBT-themed YA graphic novel, You Brought Me the Ocean. Alex Sanchez and artist Jul Maroh were the creative team behind that 2019 re-imagining of the origin story for Jackson "Jake'' Hyde, the second Aqualad. Within the graphic novel, Jake is unaware of his half-Atlantean nature and initially uncomfortable with his emerging sexuality. However, Jake finds himself falling for his fellow high school student, Kenny Liu, even as Jake's powers begin to manifest themselves whenever he is exposed to water.

Elden Ring is ripe for an HBO Max animated series

FromSoftware's latest dark-fantasy epic Elden Ring has been out for less than two months, but it's already proven to be another landmark video game in the medium. The way it transcends what's been considered the norm in games of its genre is akin to the impact the likes of Super Mario 64, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild had at the time of their releases. With Elden Ring, the game takes FromSoftware's past Souls-like titles like Dark Souls III, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and creates an ambitious open-world action RPG by blending them with the rewarding level of exploration and traversal in Skyrim and Breath of the Wild.

However, as acclaimed as this new IP is as a game, it has boundless potential outside of the format as well. It seems that Bandai Namco recognizes that too, as a press release from the Japanese video game publisher stated that "We will continue to expand Elden Ring, not only as a game but using all parts of the IP (such as characters) in various ways, so please look forward to it." Even before this, it could've been seen as foreshadowing ever since it was announced that A Song of Ice and Fire author George R. R. Martin helped write the foundational lore for Elden Ring's world of the Lands Between. With the game's marketing, Martin's ties to HBO for Game of Thrones projects, and the grand scope of the game's lore, Elden Ring makes a strong case for making an HBO Max animated series its next site of grace.
