New Denon Electronics Systems Control iPods

Denon Electronics announced today they were unveiling the first products in a new family of integrated home entertainment systems. The S-301 ($1,599) and S-101 ($999) are 2.1 channel surround sound DVD home theater systems from the S-Series. Both provide a clean way for portable digital devices such as iPods to easily integrate into them, among other things, and will be available in August.

A specially designed front-panel connector and supplied cable connects directly to third and fourth generation iPods, according to Denon. This connection allows the S-301 and S-101 to full control the popular Apple digital audio players, even offering the iPod navigational menu on the main home theater screen. The S-301 is also capable of mimicking a similar command and control connectivity to other MP3 players via a USB port in the front panel.

Other useful features of these products from the new S-Series include integrated DVD/A/V receiver, dual satellite speakers, subwoofers, an on screen remote interface, component video conversion and support of Dolby Virtual Speaker technology.

Nura’s personalized earbuds are reborn as the Denon Perl

In April 2023, Denon announced that it had acquired Australian wireless earbud maker, Nura, and that we could expect to see new earbuds from the combined brands "soon." Today, Denon has effectively relaunched Nura's two wireless earbuds -- the NuraTrue and NuraTrue Pro -- as the Denon Perl ($199) and Denon Perl Pro ($349). Denon says a limited number of Denon Perl and Perl Pro headphones are now available for purchase at Denon.com, with a full rollout planned for later this year.

The Perl and Perl Pro, which Denon has stylized with a capital L (PerL), appear to preserve all of the NuraTrue and NuraTrue Pro's features, and in looking at the new Denon earbuds, it appears that they're also physically identical to Nura's now-discontinued products. One thing that has changed is the price of the NuraTrue Pro. Already fairly expensive at $329, Denon's version is now $20 more.

Skullcandy’s new earbuds mimic the AirPods Pro for just $100

Skullcandy's latest wireless earbuds are packed with features, and in typical Skullcandy fashion, they're priced much lower than the competition. The new Skullcandy Rail ($80) and Rail ANC ($100) look very similar to Apple's AirPods Pro 2, and in the case of the Rail ANC, they possess many of the same features. Both models are available on Skullcandy.com starting June 13.

Each Rail model uses the same shape and silicone eartips to seal your ear canal, with touch controls on both earbuds, however, the Rail ANC use transparent plastic for the inside half of the earbud, and they have an extra set of microphones. Here's what you can expect from each Rail version.

AirPods are a technical marvel. But they're also a fickle beast that at times seem to have a life of their own. That's perhaps true for most wireless earbuds, but maybe more so for Apple's given their close relationship to Apple's hardware and software.

In other words, mine have been driving me nuts this week. The problem isn't necessarily a new one. It's definitely not unheard of for my AirPods Pro to go a little wonky from time to time, to the point where I've made a habit of making sure they actually, ya know, work, before leaving my case in the car and heading into the gym in the morning.
