PlayStation 3 to Get DivX Support

PlayStation 3 to Get DivX Support

Sony’s PlayStation 3 may be able to play hi-def video off of Blu-Ray discs, but up until now it hasn’t been able to handle one of the most popular formats for downloaded and homebrew video, DivX. That will change when the device finally gets DivX certification, which is in the works.

According to DivX, Inc., the platform is currently up for certification now and should get it “in the near future.” New PS3s should ship with DivX capability, while current PS3 owners will be able to enable it with a software upgrade to be released. Developers will also be able to make use of DivX encoding in their games using the 2.0 version of the PS3 Software Development Kit, which was just released on Nov. 2.

“We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3,” said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, in a statement. “Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format.” Giving DivX certification to the PS3 will also boost the number of DivX-certified devices on the streets, of which there are already 100 million.

Someone relaxing on a couch watching Hulu.

On January 30, Sony closed the doors on its Playstation Vue, which for several years was the only live-TV streaming option for owners of Sony's PlayStation 4 and 4 Pro gaming consoles. YouTube TV was the first service to fill the void left by PSVue's demise, but now PlayStation owners have a second choice and it's bound to be a popular one: Hulu + Live TV is now available on PS4.

"Current PlayStation 4 users who already have Hulu can easily switch to Hulu + Live TV through their account settings on Hulu.com. Viewers who are already subscribed to Hulu + Live TV will also now be able to access and watch live channels through the Hulu app on PlayStation 4," said a Hulu press release.

For a lot of PS4 owners, the news that Sony's PS Vue live TV streaming service will be shutting down at the end of this month came as a bit of a shock. With no other live TV streaming services available on the popular gaming console, it meant that subscribers would have to buy another streaming device just to get access to an alternative service. Still, as we had hoped and expected, Sony has decided to open up the PS4 to third parties: Today, YouTube TV launches on the PS4, making it the first non-Sony-owned live TV service on the platform.

With this announcement, it's now just a matter of time before the PS4 (and PS4 Pro) become full-fledged alternatives to devices like the Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV for folks who are looking to cut the cord in favor of live TV streaming subscriptions. So far, however, the monopoly has shifted from Sony to YouTube TV.
