PlayStation Network Tunes into NBC Universal Movies and TV

Sony and NBC Universal have inked a deal that makes selected Universal movies and NBC television programming available on the PlayStation Network for download to PS3s and PSPs. Currently limited to users in the United States, the initial offering includqes about 1,300 movies and about 4,500 television episodes.

For currently airing television shows—like 30 Rock,Battlestar Galactica,The Office, and Heroes—new episodes will be available the day after their air in both standard definition and HD formats. Movies available via the service include potty-humor favorites like Role Models and The 40-Year Old Virgin, along with higher-brow potty humor like The Big Lebowski. Prices for episodes and movies vary by title and format, with rentals seeming to land between $3 and $6 and purchases from $10 to $14, with high-definition offerings carrying higher price tags.

Sony’s PlayStation Network has about 20 million registered users worldwide, about 9 million of whom are in the United States and (thus) able to access the new television and movie offerings.

YouTube TV adds Magnolia Network and other FAST channels

YouTube TV has added a handful of channels of the FAST variety — that is, the sort of thing you'd find on an ad-supported service like Tubi or The Roku Channel. The additions are hardly the only FAST channels on the largest live-streaming service in the U.S., which has more than 5 million subscribers as of June 2022.

New to YouTube TV are Magnolia Network, Charge!, TBD TV, and T2. The CW also makes an appearance in the list of new channels after a new deal was reached earlier this spring.

Technics’ new SU-GX70 streaming amp plays nice with TV audio

Renowned audio maker Technics is bringing HDMI ARC to its high-end amplifiers for the first time with the announcement of the new SU-GX70, a versatile streaming amplifier with a ton of connectivity options for easy integration of sources, including TVs. The Japanese company also announced a new matte white version of its popular SL-1500C turntable.

Since Technics' brand revitalization in 2014, the company has been pumping out some excellent earbuds, new turntables, and beautiful hi-fi components. But until now, the company hasn't offered a way for customers to easily integrate a TV into their hi-fi systems. The SU-GX70 Network Audio Amplifier is the first Technics product to include HDMI ARC connectivity. Technics says that the new amp is addressing demand in the market for "high-quality amplifiers allowing easy integration of a TV into the home hi-fi system for superior sound without the hassle of a complex multichannel system."

Plex now lets you skip the credits on movies and TV shows

In a move that is sure to enrage the thousands of people whose names appear at the end of our favorite movies and TV shows, Plex has introduced a new feature that lets you skip the end credits on the content in your personal library.

The feature works similarly to its Skip Intro option -- a far less controversial feature given that most subscription streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video already let you do this. With Skip Credits, the Plex Media Server uses an algorithm to detect the difference between a screen full of rolling text and a screen that has a full image of, well, not text.
