Detailed on the Roku company blog, the official Redbox Instant by Verizon application became available for download yesterday. Owners of the Roku 3, Roku 2, Roku HD (model 2500) and Roku LT (models 2400 & 2450) player or Roku Streaming Stick can now access the application and stream any of the 5,500 movies currently available through the streaming service. Similar to Netflix’s business model, the Redbox Instant subscription price is $8 a month or $9 a month to include Blu-ray as physical rental option. Redbox Instant subscribers receive four free rentals per month which can be picked up at a physical Redbox location in their vicinity.

Roku 3While Redbox Instant’s streaming content library is significantly smaller than competitors like Netflix, the subscription plan is more targeted at providing added value to heavy users of the Redbox rental service.

For instance, if someone typically rents three or four movies a month at a local Redbox location, it’s easy to justify spending a few dollars more each month to get access to popular streaming titles like The Avengers or The Hunger Games. Library growth has been relatively slow since March, only increasing by about 1,000 streaming titles over the last five months.

However, the development team has actively building applications on popular platforms since the public launch of the Redbox Instant streaming service earlier this year. Android and iOS mobile applications were the priority at launch and Xbox 360 support quickly followed after the launch.  A version of the application has already launched for Google TV users as well.

At E3, Sony promised that the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4 would receive the Redbox Instant application by fall 2013. In addition, the Redbox Instant team has reached out to Google in regards to adding Chromecast support to the Redbox Instant mobile applications. After the Roku launch, a native application for the Apple TV could be the next target. However, the application already launched on the Samsung smart TV platform and other partners announced at CES 2013 included Vizio and LG.

Roku calls Google an ‘unchecked monopolist’ as ongoing YouTube TV spat rages on
Roku Streambar Pro.

In late April, Roku made the decision to pull the YouTube TV app from its channel store, effectively denying it to any Roku user who wants to add it to their streaming device. It also prevented any Roku users from creating a new subscription to the Google-owned live TV streaming service.

It was the opening salvo in a very public contractual dispute between Roku and Google. On May 7, in an apparent attempt to limit further damage that might be caused if Roku elects to remove the YouTube TV app entirely, Google began updating its regular YouTube app on Roku with the ability to access YouTube TV content if you're a YouTube TV subscriber.

Quibi might be dead, but its content lives on with acquisition by Roku
Quibi Logo

Quibi's hype-driven launch and subsequent rapid failure have become comedic fodder for memes and pop-culture references, but it looks like Roku is the one getting the last laugh. The streaming device company announced today that it has acquired Quibi Holdings, LLC, the company that holds all of Quibi’s content-distribution rights, for an undisclosed amount.

The acquisition effectively moves control of Quibi's content to Roku, which plans to make that content available exclusively on its The Roku Channel service. The content, which includes more than 75 shows and documentaries that Quibi created in conjunction with leading studios and production companies, will be made available for free on an ad-supported basis to all Roku users in 2021.

HBO Max and Roku bury the hatchet: Roku users can add the service December 17
Wonder Woman 1984

It's been a long time coming, but Roku has finally announced that its users will be able to download the HBO Max streaming service to Roku devices starting tomorrow, December 17. If you already have the normal HBO app on your Roku device, it will automatically update to become the HBO Max app.

The timing is good for Roku users who were thinking they might need to find another device to use. HBO Max will debut Wonder Woman 1984 on December 25 (the same day it hits theaters), marking the first time the service has added content in 4K, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. Roku users who want to stream HBO Max's content in all three of these formats will need a 2020 Roku Ultra, or one of the Roku TV models that support them.
