Samsung’s blistering 219-inch Micro LED TV will cook your eyeballs, blow your mind

You don’t have to be a K-pop fan to enjoy Samsung’s new 219-inch Micro LED TVs. But it probably helps. Because at this size, whatever’s on TV pretty much looks like real life. And you’d better believe Samsung is blasting some pop culture from home on it.

That’s what we learned after witnessing the goliath TV for ourselves at CES 2019. If you’re shopping for your own house, Samsung’s 75-inch Micro LED probably makes more sense. But if you wanted to see a spectacle from CES, this is it.

Like all Micro LED screens, the black levels are true, but the brightness at this scale is what really blows you away. When there’s a picture of the sun coming over the horizon, it’s blisteringly, almost uncomfortably bright. And the color gamut is outstanding.

The screen is made from modular panels that Samsung has stitched together to make a TV of almost unprecedented size. One of the things that we complained about last year was that we could see the lines. This year, Samsung condensed everything. The LEDs are closer, so they get a little bit more play, and more importantly, the seams are smaller. The stitching together is much better than it was before.

If you get really close, you can absolutely see the seams. But that’s not how anyone watches TV. Step back, then step back some more.  When you get to about 6 feet, you can no longer see the seams, and that’s still way too close to comfortably watch, anyway. This is a legitimate display technology. You could forgo a conventional projector and get a much, much brighter image.

In fact, that’s already happening. Samsung has theaters across the U.S. and in Korea that use this type of screen technology. It’s 4K, not 8K, but at this size, you won’t be bothered. It looks amazing, and the contrast is off the charts.

At CES 2019, it doesn’t get much bigger than Samsung’s 219-inch Micro LED display.

Samsung kicks off CES 2022 doing what Samsung does best -- taking its line of many televisions, already great in their own right, and kicking things up yet another notch. Smarter, brighter, better, easier to use -- all the things that make a TV more than a TV in an era in which we're spending more time in front of the TV than ever.

On the front side of things is a new home screen, "a testament to our vision for the future of TVs." Samsung is paring things down to three main hubs -- a Media Screen, a Gaming Hub, and Ambient Mode. They're mostly self-explanatory. If it's something you're going to watch (via Samsung's built-in apps, anyway), you'll get to it from the Media Screen. The Gaming Hub gets you into your cloud-based gaming services and consoles and works with existing third-party controllers and headsets. And the Ambient Mode makes it easier than ever to have something pleasant on the screen when you're not actively watching or playing something. That includes art, or photos, or even NFTs, because it's 2022 and it's all about non-fungible tokens, apparently.

If you've got a hankering for a huge TV and you have a correspondingly huge budget, you now have a new option: LG's new line of LG DVLED Extreme Home Cinema TVs are available in sizes ranging from a mild 81-inches all the way up to a gigantic 325 inches. LG's prices are equally gargantuan: You'll pay $70,000 for the smallest model, but the biggest model is exponentially more expensive at $1,700,000 -- about three times the price of the SF90, the most powerful Ferrari road car ever produced. If those numbers don't faze you, you can order your DVLED Extreme Home Cinema model starting today.

The TVs use direct-view LED (DVLED) technology, similar to the kind used by Samsung's The Wall and Sony's Crystal LED displays, where individual microLEDs are used for each pixel, offering many of the self-illuminating advantages of OLED TVs, but with greater brightness, more colors, ultrawide viewing angles, and of course, huge screen sizes.  Unlike regular LG TVs, the DVLED Extreme Home Cinema are aimed at the high-end luxury home market, so they won't be sold in regular retail locations. Instead, these displays are available exclusively through a custom installation dealer program.
