Digital television makers Sony and Vizio have resolved their long-running patent dispute in a rather surprising way: the companies have cross-licensed each others’ digital television patent portfolios. Under the agreement, Sony now has access to Vizio’s digital television patents and Vizio has access to Sony’s.

“Having successfully resolved the disputes, we shall continue to aggressively protect our rights and actively expand Vizio’s licensing program,” said Vizio’s VP of operations and administration Rob Brinkman, in a statement. “As an owner of patent rights and as a licensee of legitimate patent right held by others, Vizio respects intellectual property and we expect our competitors to do the same.”

Financial terms of the arrangement were not disclosed.

Vizio is currently locked in a number of patent disputes with leading consumer electronics manufacturers, including Funai Electric and LG Electronics.

Vizio has recently been able to parley its low prices and discount retailer presence into the top slot for LCD TV sales in the United States.

It's a new era for Sony. The company, once famous for its horrible product names that more closely resembled serial numbers, has finally landed on a simple naming convention. Take its new 2024 TVs, for instance. Every new model is now called "Bravia," with a single digit to denote where it stands in the lineup.

The simplified naming convention also applies to the company's 2024 soundbar lineup, with the hope that buyers will want to pair their new Bravia TV with a matching new Bravia Theater soundbar.

Sony’s ULT Power Sound headphones and speakers go big on powerful bass
Sony ULT Wear and ULT Field 1.

Sony has announced a line of wireless audio products under a new sub-brand called ULT Power Sound (or ULT for short). They look familiar because they are the next-gen versions of three of Sony's existing product lines: Extra Bass headphones, portable Bluetooth speakers, and tower-shaped party speakers.

They'll all be available this spring, but Sony hasn't given exact timing for release dates.
