Netflix confirms a new Witcher anime film is in the works

We already knew Netflix would produce more content from the world of The Witcher, as the show was renewed for an eight-episode second season ahead of its first season premiere but now, the world is expanding. According to Netflix’s sci-fi Twitter account, NXonNetflix, a new Witcher story for the streaming giant is already in the works.

A new anime film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, is currently being produced by the Witcher team of Lauren Hissrich, Beau DeMayo, in conjunction with Studio Mir — the studio behind Legend of Korra.

Less than 24 hours after Netflix’s announcement that season 1 of The Witcher attracted more than 76 million viewers according to the company’s new metrics, putting it on track to become the streaming service’s most popular show ever, Netflix struck while the iron was hot, keeping the show and service at the top of the news cycle. Considering Netflix shows are released all at once, this release serves as a clever way to keep anticipation and excitement over the show at a fever pitch.

While little is known about the upcoming film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf has thus far been described as a spinoff that “explores a powerful new threat facing the Continent.” The release also suggested that the film will be used to expand the universe, indicating that we may see both familiar and new faces.

Released on December 20, The Witcher follows a monster-hunter known as Geralt of Rivia (played by Henry Cavill), a mage named Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and a young princess named Ciri (Freya Allen) as their destinies become inextricably intertwined by the politics of their world. The series is based on the Andrzej Sapkowski book series of the same name, which has also been adapted into a popular video game series.

No casting details or commitments have been released as yet. Likewise, there is no timeline or release date at this point in time. It’s possible that the film may serve as a bridge between seasons or pick up with new characters entirely.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as new information becomes available.
