You don’t always get what you pay for. Sometimes you get much more. When I heard that Delta Spirit was playing the Doug Fir with the Chicago-based opening act of Ezra Furman and the Harpoons, and the tickets were a mere $12, it was a no brainer. The Doug Fir is an interesting venue in that it is willing to host all manner of artists and bands, which is a fantastic trait. The downside to that is that sometimes the crowds can be fickle, and an excellent show can be overlooked. An empty hall can kill the most energetic performance. Thankfully that was not the case this Thursday.
Delta Spirit are an up and coming band possibly just one or two hit songs and a lucky break away from true stardom. As they jammed to a packed Doug Fir, the crowd quickly bought into Delta’s stage presence, and those that were lucky enough to be in attendance easily got their monies worth. It also helped that Ezra Furman and the Harpoons sounded great, although they lack the stage presence that Delta has developed.
If Delta Spirit continues to work their way up, their next trip through Portland will be a must see show. No matter the cost.
