Dyson’s new AR mobile app shows where you forgot to clean

Dyson has always been on the cutting edge of vacuum technology, with heaps of premium vacuums filling the pages of its product catalog. Now, the company seems to be branching out to the world of augmented reality, with the reveal of Dyson CleanTrace — a new feature on the MyDyson mobile app that shows you all the spots in your home that are yet to be cleaned.

Using Dyson CleanTrace is simple, though it comes with pretty strict limitations. For one, it only works with the expensive Dyson Gen5detect cordless vacuum. It also requires a smartphone with a lidar scanner (like an iPhone 15) and a special clamp to attach your phone to the vacuum (which is yet to receive a price tag). With all that out of the way, you’ll then be able to launch the MyDyson app and access the CleanTrace feature for free when it arrives in June.

As you vacuum your home, your Gen5detect will leave behind a purple trail that’s visible on the mobile app, giving you visual confirmation of the areas in your home that have been cleaned. Dyson says the goal behind the AR app is to help humans mimic the “methodical cleaning approach of [its] robot vacuums.”

Introducing Dyson CleanTrace™

Being able to see where you have and haven’t vacuumed is undoubtedly useful, and it should be a welcome addition to the Gen5detect when it launches this summer.

This isn’t the first attempt by Dyson to help humans clean more like robots vacuums, as the Gen5detect already offers a unique green headlight designed to better illuminate dust lurking on your floor. As you suck up dust and debris, the green glow around the vacuum will gradually become dimmer. Combined with the upcoming CleanTrace feature, it should be easier than ever to get a home that’s perfectly clean.

Dyson hasn’t announced if the feature will roll out to other vacuums, or if it’ll be limited to the Gen5detect. There doesn’t seem to be anything restricting it to just this premium cordless vacuum (other than the required smartphone clamp), so we’re hopeful it’ll branch out to more affordable products in the future. Expect to hear more about a specific release date and pricing for the clamp in the coming months.

When it comes to robot vacuums and mops, most models employ one of two methods to clean your floors -- a vibrating mop plate or spinning mop pads. Eureka is doing things a bit differently this year, as the team revealed the J20 Robotic Vacuum and Floor Washer at CES 2024, which uses an innovative new belt mop design.

The so-called RollRenew mopping system features a cycling belt mop, a dual water tank, and five water nozzles. As the robot rolls its mop across your floors, the nozzles will continuously spray water, cleaning up stains and soaking up spills. The dirty portion of the mop is then cleaned by a scraper located under the robot, forcing the dirty water into a wastewater reservoir.

Eufy is a big name in the smart home space, and it had plenty of cool gadgets to show off at CES 2024. Along with giving consumers a closer look at four recently launched security cameras, Eufy revealed the X10 Pro Omni robot vacuum and mop, which looks to be an affordable alternative to flagships from Roborock and Ecovacs.

The X10 Pro Omni doesn't make any huge innovations in the world of robot vacuums. Most of its features we've already seen on other robots, such as its ability to empty its dustbin, clean its mop, then dry it to prevent the accumulation of mildew. It also boasts an avoidance system to ensure it's not bumping into any shoes, toys, or other items that have accidentally been left in its path. And while its 8,000 Pa of suction is impressive, it's a number a handful of other robots have already hit.

Roborock is responsible for many of the best robot vacuums, and this year is shaping up to be another big one for the company. A whole fleet of robot vacuums were on display at CES 2024, including the highly automated S8 MaxV Ultra and S8 Max Ultra -- both of which can connect to your home drainage system to automatically empty and refill their water reservoirs.

The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is the most luxurious of the bunch, offering a self-maintained cleaning system that will empty water tanks, refill water tanks, dispense detergent, wash its mop with hot water, and dry its mop with warm air. All this is possible due to its newfound ability to connect to your home's built-in drain lines, removing the need for you to fuss around with dirty water tanks or refill water reservoirs (which is arguably the worst part of owning a robot vacuum).
