Afraid of heights? Afraid of water? Stay away from this glass-bottom ‘skypool’

Battersea in London is the location of a famous home for dogs and cats, and soon it will likely attract visitors for another reason: a planned “sky pool” that will be span the space between two apartment blocks near the Battersea Power Station.

The pool will be made of glass casing nearly eight inches thick, giving swimmers a view of the street 115 feet below. Residents in the 2,000-home Embassy Gardens Legacy Buildings can do laps in the 82-foot pool, which will join the two buildings. Architecture firm Arup Associates designed the pool, which is about 16 feet wide and 10 feet deep, according to Dezeen. Structural design engineers Eckersley O’Callaghan and aquarium designers Reynolds also consulted on the project.

London architects HAL are building the development, which is set to launch in 2017. It does not look like the will be cheap, as a three-bedroom apartment listed from the first phase of the Embassy Gardens is going for over $8 million.

If you’re not ready to put down a deposit but still want the thrill of taking a dip hundreds of feet in the air, you can always travel to the Holiday Inn in Shanghai, which has a pool over 300 feet in the air. Plunging into the infinity pool at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands hotel makes you feel like you’re sitting at the edge of the world, and another building in Singapore that’s nearing completion will also have a swimmable bridge, though the bottom isn’t made of glass.

Of course, if you’d rather have a private pool and still live in an apartment, you can move to Mumbai. The 30-story Bandra Ohm, from James Law Cybertecture, will have around 100 units with their own acrylic-encased balcony pools. Being able to afford one of these high-end apartments would take a stroke of luck.
