Alcatel One Touch Idol to guest star in Iron Man 3, will come to the U.S. later this year

Alcatel One Touch IdolAlcatel announced the One Touch Idol during CES 2013 along with a selection of other devices in the One Touch range, including the current holder of the, “world’s slimmest smartphone” crown, the One Touch Idol Ultra. However, while the Idol Ultra may have the awards, the standard Idol has – rather appropriately given its name – scored a role in a major new movie.

The One Touch Idol will be featured in Iron Man 3, the third cinematic outing for Tony Stark, which premiers on April 24 and goes on general release May 3. Alcatel had already announced it’s the exclusive mobile phone partner of the film, and has splashed posters all over its Facebook page, but this is the first time we’ve heard exactly which device will be on screen.

A few of the specifications have altered on the One Touch Idol since we last wrote about the device. It has a 4.7-inch screen, but the HD resolution quoted during CES is actually qHD, meaning it has 960 x 540 pixels. There’s a dual-core MediaTek processor inside which runs at 1GHz, and an 8-megapixel camera on the rear of the 7.9mm thick phone, which Alcatel says is the, “Lightest in its category,” at 110 grams. Exactly which category this is, we’re not sure, but we’ll take a guess and say it’s compared to other devices with 4.7-inch screens.

Whether Stark will sport a One Touch Idol isn’t known, but if he does decide to pick one up, he’ll have had a choice of various colors, including silver, slate, red, blue, green or pink. Although we doubt he’ll have gone for the latter. The spec sheet is completed by an 1800mAh battery, a 2-megapixel video call camera, 4GB of internal memory and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Alcatel has also confirmed the One Touch Idol will be coming out in the U.S. later this year, but refused to be locked down to an actual date. Incidentally, Alcatel has a competition running on its Facebook page to win a trip to the Iron Man 3 premier, so take a look if you’re keen.

The Nokia 3210 is the worst phone I’ve used in 2024
A person holding the Nokia 3210, showing the screen.

Where do I even start with the Nokia 3210? Not the original, which was one of the coolest phones to own back in a time when Star Wars: Episode 1 -- The Phantom Menace wasn’t even a thing, but the latest 2024 reissue that has come along to save us all from digital overload, the horror of social media, and the endless distraction that is the modern smartphone.

Except behind this facade of marketing-friendly do-goodery hides a weapon of torture, a device so foul that I’d rather sit through multiple showings of Jar Jar Binks and the gang hopelessly trying to bring back the magic of A New Hope than use it.
The Nokia 3210 really is that bad
