Apple Nixed Multi-touch in Android?

Apple Nixed Multi-touch in Android?

When a hacker is able to enable multi-touch capabilities on T-Mobile’s Android-powered G1, you have to wonder how Google engineers couldn’t figure it out. As it turns out, they could – but the booming voice of a fruit told them not to.

According to an anonymous Android team member cited by VentureBeat, the Android team was well-aware how to enable multi-touch, but opted to leave it out by request from Apple. Unfortunately, neither the source nor VentureBeat specified whether Apple’s “asking” came in the form of a friendly request for a favor, or a thinly veiled legal threat.

Given how closely Google and Apple have worked together in the past (witness: Google maps integration on the iPhone and Google as the default search engine for the phone,) it isn’t out of the question that Google axed multi-touch voluntarily. But given rumblings of a patent war between Palm and Apple over multi-touch on the Pre, it’s clear that legal issues may have loomed over the decision, as well. And VB’s source is apparently glad they left it out for that reason.

Both Dell and HP have produced multi-touch enabled notebooks, but no company has yet released a multi-touch-enabled phone similar to the iPhone. Palm’s anticipated release of the Pre later this year will likely be the first challenger, either leading the way for others or proving that Apple’s patents will make things difficult.

Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy A03s -- $40, was $60

Samsung makes some of the best phones on the market, and while the Galaxy A03s might not fall under that banner, it is a great budget phone. It has a 6.5-inch HD+ with a 60Hz refresh rate, which is pretty solid, and the 3GB of RAM is not too bad either. That said, it only has 32GB of internal storage, although that can be upgraded with a MicroSD card, so it's not so bad. The phone comes paired with a Straight Talk plan, which you can get for as low as $15 a month.

I tried the new OnePlus 12 in white. It’s the Elvis Presley of Android phones
OnePlus 12 Glacial White held in hand against a marble surface.

We're long past the days when phones were distinguished solely based on their design. Despite more modern form factors such as foldables, the contemporary slab phone design reigns supreme -- because why reinvent the wheel when the current one gives you perfect traction on all roads? That said, phone brands have never stopped imagining newer design tweaks to help phones stand out, and a phone's color is a primary focus of attention.

Within the limited dimensions of the back panel, smartphone brands have persistently iterated different color choices, combinations, and textures over the past few years. We have seen trends such as textures under glass, gradients, vegan leather, and more. But OnePlus is taking a rather simple step of launching a new white color variant of the OnePlus 12. The Glacial White OnePlus 12 has been available in China since the phone was originally launched last December and is now moving out of the mainland as a limited edition.
