Budget iPhone rumors re-emerge, looks like it may not come to U.S.

As we’ve heard in the past (and noted in this rumor roundup), it looks like a budget iPhone may indeed be on the way. Apple is scheduled to host its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, and DigiTimes has caught wind of another rumor about a new low-cost iPhone, by way Apple’s Taiwan supply chain. The model is said to be held together by a cost-effective plastic chassis, and targeted specifically to as-yet-unknown “emerging markets.”

The new model will allegedly sport a 4-inch LTPS display (a speedy LCD screen), and an A6 processor (as seen on iPhone 5). Sources say to expect quarterly shipments of about 2.5-3.0 million units. And as usual, Apple is expected to keep on building the phone with its current Chinese manufacturers, like Foxconn.

With such small shipments, it looks like Apple will be trying to test the market for the new device, but we’re still missing a lot of clarification on where, when, and if the model will arrive. Expect to hear more soon, but if everything stays quiet during May, we can probably expect confirmation or negation of this new iPhone at the WWDC in June.

Google is making it easier to ditch your iPhone for an Android phone

Switching phones is never a smooth process, even if you’re switching between two different Android phones. According to an APK teardown from Android Authority, Google’s Data Transfer Tool will finally resolve the problem of migrating iOS Live Photos to Android. It will do this by converting them over as Motion Photos.

Imagine paying a minimum of $999 for a new iPhone 14 Pro in 2022, only to discover that it can’t run the full iOS 18 experience in less than two years. It seems the long-overdue Siri overhaul will finally arrive at WWDC in just over a week from now, and the digital assistant will embrace AI trickery in all its forms. According to Bloomberg, Apple’s planned upgrades for Siri will deeply integrate with on-device functions at the OS level and with the installed apps, too.

“The new system will allow Siri to take command of all the features within apps for the first time,” the report says. The most notable capability is that Siri will only require voice prompts to interact with apps, thanks to a major change in the AI architecture powering it and putting large language models in command, just the way Gemini or ChatGPT draw their own skills from such models.
