Google Tango-enabled Asus Zenfone AR accidently leaked by Qualcomm

Qualcomm let slip some information about an upcoming Asus smartphone — and a very interesting one at that. The company seems to have accidentally published a blog post containing information about an “Asus Zenfone AR,” which is only the second consumer-facing Google Tango-enabled smartphone. So why do we think that the blog post is a leak? Well, it’s dated January 4, it is about a phone to be unveiled at CES and has since been taken down — but not before publications like GSMArena saw it.

Another interesting fact about the device is that it will be the first Tango-enabled phone that also supports Google’s Daydream View headset — making it a perfect device for those interested in augmented and virtual reality.

The device will also make use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821. While that is 2016’s flagship and we’re now turning to chips like the Snapdragon 835, the Snapdragon 821 is still a very powerful processor and can handle a lot more than the only other Tango-enabled phone on the market, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro.

Following the Qualcomm leak, Evan Blass, also known on Twitter as @evleaks, posted renders of what he says is the Asus Zenfone AR.

There is no word on pricing or availability for the phone just yet, but more information should be announced when the phone is presumably launched at CES on Wednesday.

The Zenfone AR isn’t the only Zenfone we expect to see at CES 2017. Asus has also tweeted about a new Zenfone that will feature the “world’s best processor,” which we assume to be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. While no other details about the new device have surfaced just yet, like the Zenfone AR, more will be announced shortly.

The Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are on the cusp of being officially revealed, with the Pixel Fall Launch event set for October 19. But new renders from reliable leaker Evan Blass leave little to the imagination, reducing the odds of any major surprises. Showing off everything from Face Unlock to the new Pixel Stand and even cases, the renders show that the Pixel 6 may very well be Google's best phone yet in terms of both software and hardware.

The new leak doesn't as much show us new things as it does flesh out little details we already knew. Android 12 and Material You, for example, look great on the Pixel 6 based on the renders. The company is making the Pixel interface feel a little more familiar to those coming from iOS and other Android skins by switching to a four-icon layout by default and moving to a rounder interface than it used previously. The color choices Google's chosen for the hardware also blend well with the pastel-inspired software theming, as we've seen from previous showings.

Google's Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are launching in a matter of weeks, but a new leak today just showcased what will be the phone's killer feature: Its camera. The report comes from Brandon Lee, a YouTuber with access to a preproduction Google Pixel 6 Pro who has provided earlier Pixel 6 Pro leaks on pricing and color names.

Now, there are quite a few caveats here. First, the photos come sourced from, as already said, preproduction hardware from a source in Nigeria. It's not quite clear if the software on the phone being used is the same as what Google is going to push out, nor is the photographer (or weather conditions) amenable to showcasing the best of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Finally, we're only seeing the Pixel 6 photos through compressed social media posts, rather than in their full quality. It's best to think of this as giving you an idea of what Google's next phone can do, rather than being a true indicator.

Google's Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are launching soon as the company's next flagship phones and prospective iPhone 13 competitors. While the company has already shared a lot of what the Pixel 6 will bring, a pair of reports add more color to what we already know about the Pixel 6. Coming from XDA Developers, the reports claim to detail the display, camera, and processor that will ship in Google's next phone.

First, and most pertinent to the appropriately named Pixel, Google is updating the camera hardware of the Pixel 6 from the Sony IMX363 it had packed starting with the Pixel 4a 5G. Instead, it could be swapping it for Samsung’s 50MP GN1 image sensor and supplementing it with an ultrawide lens and a Sony 12MP IMX386 image sensor, paired with a Sony 48MP IMX586 sensor for telephoto capture.
