AT&T Releases Flood of QWERTY Phones

Feeding a growing consumer hunger for cheap QWERTY-equipped phones that make tapping out text easier, AT&T unveiled a menu of four brand new messaging phones on Tuesday. The Pantech Matrix, Samsung Propel, Pantech Slate and AT&T Quickfire all feature full QWERTY keyboards at prices under $100.

The staggered release schedule for the phones will see the Matrix, Propel and Slate hit stores in late October, while the most high-end of the bunch, the QuickFire, will debut in November.

The Matrix follows closely in the footsteps of Pantech’s earlier Duo design by offering a QWERTY keyboard that slides out the side and a number pad that slides out the bottom, leaving the majority of the front as uninterrupted LCD screen. AT&T offers it immediately in navy blue or black with green, and will also add red to the line on Oct. 16. It sells for $80 with a two-year contract and rebate.

Pantech’s Slate takes the opposite approach, with zero sliding parts and the QWERTY pad added to its face below the LCD. Its claim to fame: AT&T says it’s the world’s thinnest phone with a full keyboard. It’s also the cheapest in the new line at just $50 with rebate and contract.

Samsung’s Propel takes a quirkier approach to hiding its keys with a fat front profile and a QWERTY board that slides out of the bottom, rather than the side. AT&T will offer it in blue, green, red, and white with red for $80 after contract and rebate, later in October.

Finally, the Quickfire (manufactured by UTStarCom) combines both a touch screen and full keyboard, plus 3G to boot, putting it more in the league of T-Mobile’s upcoming G1 or Sprint’s HTC Touch Diamond Pro. It will also be the priciest, at $100 after contract and rebate. AT&T will release it in orange, lime and silver in November.

For a limited time, Mint Mobile has dropped the three-month price for all of its plans to just $15 per month. That means, the Unlimited plan, normally $30 per month, or $90 for three months, is no just $15 per month or $45 for three months. The base 5GB of data per month plan is $15 per month, and the 15GB per month plan is $15 per month, or $45 for three months. That is an incredible deal. All Mint Mobile plans include unlimited talk and text, access to 5GB high-speed data, free calling to Mexico and Canada, free mobile hotspot access, and WiFi calling support. You can't beat that!

U.S. Mobile: Pre-pay $23 per line per month
Prepaid wireless plans are a great option for light users, kids, and anyone else who won’t be consuming a lot of data on a daily basis. U.S. Mobile is one of the best prepaid service providers available today, allowing you to build your own custom plan, so you’re only paying for as many minutes, texts, and gigabytes of data as you want to. As just one example, its Unlimited Starter plan is just $23 per line, or $276 for 12 months -- saving you $72 per year. You get unlimited talk, text, and data, 10GB of hotspot data, international calling and texting, and more. T-Mobile is buying one of the largest carriers in the U.S.

If you were impacted by T-Mobile's latest price hike and were looking for an alternative carrier, we have some bad news — T-Mobile is buying US Cellular. For those unaware, U.S. Cellular is the fifth-largest carrier in the U.S. despite being a regional carrier based mostly in the Chicago area. Unlike mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) like Metro by T-Mobile or Visible, which piggyback on a parent carrier’s network, US Cellular has its own towers and stores.

The deal would see T-Mobile pay $4.4 billion to take over US Cellular’s wireless customers, stores, and 30% of its spectrum assets. It includes a combination of cash and T-Mobile assuming $2 billion of U.S. Cellular’s debt. US Cellular will keep control of 4,400 of its towers and 70% of its spectrum portfolio, but T-Mobile will extend its leases for 600 US Cellular towers and sign new long-term leases on 2,015 more towers. In a conference call about the deal, T-Mobile also committed to hiring a significant number of U.S. Cellular associates.

Your next T-Mobile bill might be a lot more expensive

We have bad news for you if you have an older T-Mobile wireless plan. According to internal company documents obtained by The Mobile Report, rates for your plan are going up by $2 to $5 per month.

Customers with a legacy Simple Choice, ONE, or Magenta plan will likely experience price increases. The increased price applies to each line, meaning that if you have four lines, you could potentially see a monthly increase of up to $20 per lmonth. CNET also corroborated the report with its own sources.
