Facebook phone is a flop! AT&T may discontinue HTC First

The first sign was a price drop to $0.99 just one month after it was launched, but now it’s becoming even more clear that the HTC First is a massive flop.

You may remember the HTC First as the final form of the long-rumored Facebook phone. Running stock Android skinned with Facebook Home, the First was meant to appeal to Facebook-loving smartphone users and build up hype for Facebook Home as a replacement launcher for Android. Well, apparently it isn’t working out so well.

According to a “trusted source”, sales of the HTC First are “shockingly bad,” BGR reports. Sales are apparently so disappointing that AT&T has decided to discontinue the phone. The source says AT&T will return the unsold inventory to HTC and it seems like there could be a lot of devices to return. AT&T sold roughly 15,000 units across the U.S. when the price dropped to $0.99 on contract.

If it is true, the HTC First being a failure isn’t all that surprising. Most people who have downloaded Facebook Home on Android end up uninstalling it shortly after. While it is a compelling piece of software, the lack of widgets and general customization make it seem very anti-Android and other than flooding your phone with Facebook, doesn’t offer much of an improvement to any device.

BGR also heard AT&T staff don’t like Facebook Home and aren’t making much of an effort to convince customers into buying it. Other smartphones like the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S4 are being pushed much more heavily, the source reports.

Whatever the fate of the HTC First, AT&T will have to wait until its in-store display contract with HTC runs out before the First can be pulled from shelves and sent back to its maker. HTC has already paid for the space in AT&T’s store and it would be too much of a hassle for AT&T to back out of the deal before it runs out.

For what it’s worth, an AT&T spokesperson contacted BGR with this message, “As mentioned previously, we do pricing promotions all the time and have made no decisions on future plans.”

The OnePlus 8T revives the monochrome phone camera, and it’s really good
oneplus 8t review camera monochrome

The OnePlus 8T has a monochrome camera in its quad-camera setup, and after first hearing about it, it became the No. 1 feature on the new phone I wanted to try. My excitement comes from enjoying taking photos with the monochrome camera on the Huawei P10 and the P20 Pro, and then lamenting its disappearance on the Mate 20 Pro and beyond.

Can it possibly live up to my expectations, and kick-start a second era of genuine black-and-white photography on a smartphone? Not really, but as additional cameras on phones go, it's still a welcome return.
The camera
Let’s look at the OnePlus 8T’s camera first. The main cameras are the 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 and the 16MP Sony IMX481 ultra-wide, which are joined by a 5MP macro camera, and the 2MP monochrome camera. Yes, just 2MP, but don't look away just yet. Technically the monochrome camera is there to enhance the results from the main cameras, but it can be used on its own if you know how to do it.

Old phones will stop working with AT&T and T-Mobile. Here’s what to do about it
wait for iphone x iphone 6

While carriers are blowing their horns about the various 5G networks being rolled out across the country, there’s a bit of sleight of hand going on that will affect some long-time customers. The 3G network we used to use for voice calls is going away.

Some carriers, like AT&T and T-Mobile, are still using 3G for voice calls on older phones. Newer phones use 4G networking for Voice over LTE (VoLTE) service. AT&T and T-Mobile intend to finally abandon 3G and switch entirely to newer network technology, and that will make some older phones obsolete.

HTC begins its comeback bid with a pair of new phones
htc desire 20 pro u20 5g news

HTC has announced two new smartphones in Taiwan, the HTC Desire 20 Pro and the HTC U20 5G, after teasing a June 16 announcement through its social networks recently. Both of the new phones are midrange and make use of Qualcomm’s newest chipsets. Currently, the new HTC devices will be sold in Taiwan, but after months of silence from the company, this may be the start of its return to international prominence.

Let’s take a look at the new phones.
HTC U20 5G
This is the slightly better-specced device out of the two. It has the Snapdragon 765G chipset with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage space, plus 5G connectivity and a massive 5,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 4.0. On the front is a 6.8-inch LCD screen with a hole-punch selfie camera, and a surprisingly large chin at the bottom of the display.
