People rely heavily on their eyes to navigate through everyday situations, so what happens when your vision is severely impaired? Technology is working hard to solve many problems, including the best way to help the blind and visually impaired. A new app called Be My Eyes allows those who cannot see with their eyes, to see their surroundings with words.

With the Be My Eyes app, users direct their camera at a room or object that they need to see, and a volunteer sees a live video feed of what the user’s camera picks up. So if a visually impaired person needs to know the expiration date on a milk carton, find their way to an exit, or solve some other problem, they can get help from a volunteer, who will help them “see” what they need to see via a detailed description.

Would-be volunteers can sign up, create a profile, and start helping people right away. Volunteers earn points and get promoted to new levels, as they help more people. The volunteer network also serves as a social community of good samaritans. Meanwhile, those who are visually impaired get easy access to people who truly want to help.

“It’s my hope that by helping each other as an online community, Be My Eyes will make a big difference in the everyday lives of blind people all over the world,” wrote the app’s founder, Hans Jørgen Wiberg on the company website.

Of course, those who can see may also use the app if they need assistance with something, but it’s specially made for those who truly need it most. Right now, the Be My Eyes website is tracking how many people have used the service, based on their level of vision. While many are blind or visually impaired, many others are not. Since the app is new, it’s possible that people are just curious about how it works. However, more than 2,500 people have been helped so far.

Currently, it’s only available for iOS, but an Android version is coming soon, as is support for more languages. You can check out Be My Eyes on the App Store.

How to record a WhatsApp call on Android or iOS
whatsapp

WhatsApp is a great texting alternative that adds easier photo and video sending, easier international communication, and the ability to call via purely sound or sound and video. Unlike Zoom, however, recording a WhatsApp call isn't built-in to the software. To record a WhatsApp call, you'll have to use another application on your phone. Here, we'll take a look at the most common apps that you might want to use for recording your next WhatsApp conversation and how you can use them effectively.

If you'd prefer to use other programs, we’ve also got great guides on how to record phone calls on your iPhone or Android phone, and even one on how to record Skype calls.

I controlled this smart plant with my iPhone and I’m in love
Fluora Mini in a hallway.

I’ll be honest with you — I don’t have much of a green thumb. I’ve tried to keep flowers alive for at least a week when I am gifted them, but they don’t seem to last more than a few days. I’ve tried to keep the front lawn of my house watered, but that doesn’t always happen every day due to me doing everything else that needs to get done and just being tired.

I do love having plants for decor, but again, dead plants don’t look great. That’s why I tend to lean toward fake plants because, well, they aren’t alive to begin with, but they certainly look the part.

The iPhone’s new Journal app is worse than I thought
Apple Journal app on an iPhone 15 Pro.

One of Apple’s recent focuses on iOS and watchOS is mental health and wellness. In the most recent watchOS 10 and iOS 17 updates, Apple added Mindfulness capture, which lets you log your mood for the day or how you feel at a particular moment. Similarly, it also launched a new Journal app.

Though Apple announced the Journal app in June’s WWDC23 keynote, Journal was absent from the initial iOS 17 release. With iOS 17.2, Apple finally released Journal to the public as another tool for better mental health and wellbeing.
