With the relationship between the United States and Cuba finally thawing, it’s only natural that businesses would begin to focus their services on the Caribbean country. You can count Boost Mobile as one such business, as Sprint’s prepaid subsidiary announced new prepaid plans aimed squarely at users with family in Cuba.
Called Cuba Monthly Connect, these plans allow Boost Mobile customers in Miami to connect to friends and family they might have in Cuba. Starting at $50 a month, you get unlimited talk and text, along with 5GB of 3G/4G data and 15 minutes a month for voice calling to Cuba. The $60 a month plan doubles the amount of data you get. Both plans include unlimited texting to Cuba.
Ultimately, the goal of these plans seem to be to eliminate the need to buy calling cards, a booming business for those who sell them and a necessity for those who have friends and family in South America and the like.
Boost Mobile also throws in a few promotions with these new plans. The first promotion involves customers getting a free 4G LTE phone and an additional 25 minutes of calling to Cuba during the first month of service if they move their numbers from other carriers to Boost Mobile. Finally, if you’re a current customer, you can get 50 minutes of calling and unlimited international texts for an additional $15 per month.
These new prepaid plans seem to be a limited-time deal, though they will benefit Roots for Hope, a nonprofit organization that empowers Cuban youth through different events and programs that connect them with youth around the world.
