At the end of January, an unknown HTC smartphone was leaked, along with speculation the device would be powered by one of MediaTek’s octa-core processors. Previously, HTC worked almost solely with Qualcomm, using its Snapdragon processor to power everything from the HTC One to the Desire 300. Although we’re still waiting for the phone featured in the leak to be made official, HTC has revealed a new budget phone, notable for being its first to run a MediaTek chip.

No, it’s not the octa-core processor, but a 1.3GHz quad-core chip. It’s fitted inside the Desire 310, the follow-up to the Snapdragon-powered Desire 300 mentioned above. HTC has been tight with the details on the new Desire 310, mentioning only that it has a 4.5-inch screen, up from the 4.3-inch display on the Desire 300, and a 5-megapixel camera.

However, the Desire 310 did make a brief appearance on HTC’s own website in January, providing us with some more information. Apparently, the 4.5-inch screen will have an 854 x 480 pixel resolution, and the MediaTek processor will be accompanied by 512MB of RAM. A basic VGA video call camera can be seen above the screen, and a MicroSD card slot will help boost the 4GB of built-in memory. HTC may have saddled the Desire 310 with Android 4.2.2, and not the latest 4.4 KitKat version of Google’s OS, but it will install BlinkFeed over the top.

HTC has only announced the Desire 310 for Taiwan, where it’ll go on sale in April, but the previous leak was spotted on HTC’s European website, suggesting a wider release will come soon. It’s the use of MediaTek’s chip which makes the little Desire 310 standout, and is evidence of cost-cutting measures at HTC. It’s a big score for MediaTek too. Its chips are more commonly found in hardware from ZTE, Huawei, Alcatel and similar manufacturers, although it has been linked with both Sony and Samsung, showing the relatively young company is making progress in the industry.

Updated on 03-07-2014 by Andy: The Desire 310 will launch in several European countries, with Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the UK all on the list. In the UK, reports say it’ll be available through Vodafone, O2, and Carphone Warehouse stores. The price has been set at around 160 euros, which converts over to £140 for the UK.

MediaTek’s Dimensity 1080 chip will bring 200MP phone cameras to the masses
MediaTek Dimensity 1080.

MediaTek has announced its successor to the Dimensity 920 chipset, which powered several midrange smartphones, including the Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge, Realme 9 Pro Plus, and more. The new go-to MediaTek system on a chip (SoC) for midrange smartphones will be the Dimensity 1080. MediaTek is claiming "exceptional power efficiency" alongside better gaming performance.

The MediaTek Dimensity 1080 is based on a 6nm process like its predecessor. It consists of an octa-core CPU, which comes with two upgraded ARM Cortex-A78 CPU cores operating at up to 2.6GHz as compared to 2.5GHz on the Dimensity 920 chipset. They are accompanied by the same ARM Mali-G68 GPU.

Samsung Exynos loses big even as MediaTek widens its lead over Qualcomm

When MediaTek overtook Qualcomm to become the biggest smartphone chipset vendor in 2020, it did so by grabbing 31% of the smartphone SoC market. A year later, the Taiwanese company has not only managed to hold on to that position but has also significantly widened its lead over Qualcomm.

According to a recent Counterpoint Research report, MediaTek’s share in the smartphone chipset market -- as of Q3 2021 -- stands at 40%, showing an increase of seven percentage points compared to the same period in 2020. This increase was bolstered partly by a surge in demand for 4G LTE phones in emerging markets (like India), where 5G networks are still several years away. In comparison, Qualcomm, which had 28% of the global SoC market in 2020, found its market share drop to 27%.

4 big names commit to MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 chip for flagship phones
The MediaTek headquarters in Taiwan.

The Dimensity 9000 is MediaTek’s first true flagship smartphone processor, and one that is expected to power a wide variety of high-end devices over the next year. MediaTek said at its launch that the first devices with the chip inside would arrive during the first three months of 2022, and it has now released details on which manufacturers are signed on to use the Dimensity 9000.

Currently, there are four names on the list, and due to MediaTek’s admission that the Dimensity 9000 would initially be most relevant to the Chinese market, several of the manufacturers don’t have a big international presence at the moment. However, one stands out as being different, and that’s Oppo. The company says “the next Find X flagship will be the first to be launched with the Dimensity 9000 flagship platform.”
