Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2 to hit U.S. shelves March 9 for $650

Samsung introduced its extensive new Galaxy Tab Pro and Galaxy Note Pro line of tablets at CES this year, and although the biggest of the series has a UK price, we hadn’t heard anything about price in the United States, or even a launch date. Today Samsung revealed U.S. pricing, but you’re going to have to dig deep if you want one of the top-end models.

Updated on 3-05-2014 by Jeffrey Van Camp: Samsung has sent us official details about the Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2 release in the United States and it looks like the $650 32GB model will hit major retailer shelves on March 9, 2014. Retailers include Samsung.com, Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon, Tiger Direct, PC Richard and Sons, Fry’s, and Newegg. Samsung claims that the tablet comes with “over $800” of bundled content through Galaxy Perks.

The Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 is the headline-grabber. The massive screen has a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution, and the processor inside the tablet is a familiar Snapdragon 800 accompanied by 3GB of RAM. Android 4.4 KitKat is the OS of choice, but it’s covered with Samsung’s controversial Magazine UX, so you’ll hardly notice.

Pick up the 64GB Note Pro 12.2, and you’ll need to hand over $850 in return, or $750 for the 32GB version. If you don’t want the S Pen stylus, the Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2 is $650 for a 32GB model.

If such a monstrous screen size doesn’t appeal, then the Galaxy Tab Pro line also comes in 10.1-inches and 8.4-inches. The specs are almost identical aside from the RAM dropping down to 2GB, and the batteries getting steadily smaller. The 16GB Tab Pro 10.1 has been given a $500 price tag, and the 8.4-inch Tab Pro will cost $400.

All of these tablets except the Tab Pro 12.2 will be available to buy from February 13 through various outlets including Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart. If you’re really keen, pre-orders for these tablets will open on February 4. If the TabPro 12.2 is the tablet for you, then you’ll need to wait until March for it to go on sale. Verizon will also offer a 4G LTE version of the Note Pro 12.2 around the same time, but no price has been provided.

“Do I need all that?” That’s the question on the mind of shoppers before they splurge a now-standard $1,000 asking price for a top-tier phone in 2024. Ideally, that dilemma should be there. The likes of Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max have won laurels for a handful of standout features they offer. But you might not need those standout features at all.

I’ve been on that road, and more frequently than I have the temerity to admit. For some reason, regret comes as part of the $1,200 flagship parcel. That's unless your phone is a part of your creative or work process, or you just don’t care and only want the latest and greatest for the vanity of it. A segment like that certainly exists, but that affluent user base doesn’t dictate the journey of a product.

Everything seems to be more expensive these days, but it has always been a fairly solid and accepted rule that the biggest, most powerful Apple iPhone model — currently the iPhone 15 Pro Max — would be the most expensive non-folding smartphone you could buy, even in its most basic configuration.

However, in a continued effort to steal Apple’s thunder -- not being content with the 5x optical zoom camera and titanium frame -- Samsung has priced the Galaxy S24 Ultra higher than its prequel, giving it the dubious honor of being even more expensive than an iPhone.
