Google has unveiled a new-look Maps for mobile, with the changes set to roll out to Android and iOS users in the next couple of days.

Besides a refreshed design, the update also brings deeper Uber integration and, for users in the US, now lets you make reservations at participating restaurants from right within the app thanks to OpenTable support.

The Mountain View company is promising “bold colors and textures….and a slick new style” with its latest update to its popular Maps app.

“This new look is all about creating surfaces and shadows that echo the real world; with Google Maps’ new material feel, layers and buttons come to life so you know just where to touch to get directions, recommendations and imagery,” Google Maps’ Evelyn Kim wrote in a blog post announcing the update.

Tapping on a place’s info sheet will cause an info layer to “glide up” from the bottom of the display, bringing with it photos, reviews, and other useful tidbits. If the offered details don’t satisfy, pull up some extra data by hitting the ‘more to explore’ button.

Deeper Uber integration means you can now see estimates for how long it’ll take one of the ride-sharing service’s cars to reach you, as well as how much the journey is likely to cost – though you’ll need to have the Uber app installed to enable this functionality.

Keep an eye out for the update, it should be here by the end of the week.

OnePlus will deliver four major OxygenOS updates and five years of security updates to some new devices it launches in 2023. Confirmed at a OnePlus community event in London, the company said the decision was partly driven by recognizing more people are keeping their phones for longer.

Gary Chen, head of software products at OnePlus, said, “We do everything we can to enhance user experience. With more users keeping their devices for longer, we want to make sure we can offer that possibility. This new update policy will give users access to the latest security and functional features required to power OnePlus’ signature fast-and-smooth experience throughout the lifetime of the phone.”

Google gives Maps’ Immersive View a boost and adds a new vibe feature

Google is continuing its never-ending work of enhancing Maps, with four new updates coming to the app on Wednesday.

First up, the team has been working to expand the coverage of Immersive View. Google started rolling out the feature in July, offering remarkably detailed 3D fly-arounds of famous landmarks and layering it with useful information such as the weather, traffic conditions, and the general busyness of the area. It can do this for the current time or, by examining historical trends, for a future date. Immersive View will also let you zoom in from an aerial view right into, say, a restaurant of interest, at which point the software flips to Street View in order to take you right inside, if the imagery is available.

Currently, AT&T has its “Next Up” add-on, which has been available for the past several years. This program costs $6 extra per month and lets you upgrade by trading in your existing phone after at least half of it is paid off. But the new Next Up Anytime option gives you some more flexibility.
