Google schedules I/O bash for June 25-26, could see Glass launch

Google’s annual I/O tech bash is set to take place on June 25 and 26 this year, senior vice president Sundar Pichai said Wednesday.

The event, which is taking place about a month later than last year’s gathering, will see thousands of developers descend upon San Francisco’s Moscone Center to learn about what the Mountain View company has planned for its vast range of products and services, with a few hardware-related surprises possibly thrown in along the way.

It was at I/O in 2012, for example, that the Nexus 7 tablet made its debut, while in the same year Hangouts hooked up with Glass to give us an adrenalin-fueled demo of Google’s then very new face-based tech.

Last year, however, there was no new hardware on the table, with the Web giant instead throwing the spotlight on a big Maps update, voice-activated Google Search, and various developments with Google Play. The white Nexus 4 was also spotted in the hands of some I/O folk prior to its launch a few weeks later.

This year we might well see the long-awaited announcement on the public availability of Glass, which Google has long been expected to launch some time in 2014.

Pichai noted in his Google+ post that the registration process for attendees has undergone a few changes this year, “so you won’t need to scramble the second registration opens.”

The new system requires that developers submit their interest to attend Google I/O, after which applicants will be randomly selected and informed soon after. Full details on how to snag a ticket will be announced next month, Pichai said. The company will also be live streaming the event so everyone should be able be to drop by one way or another.
