The developers of Hipstamatic released an update today for the wildly popular iPhone camera app that includes a new lens developed with help from famed GQ fashion photographer Chiun-Kai Shih.
The saturation-heavy lens, dubbed “Chunky,” will be available for free throughout New York Fashion Week, which ends on February 17. Also, as part of the update, Hipstamatic’s creators included a new glitzy gold camera skin. After the 17th, the lens and the case will be part of a paid SoHo HipstaPak that will also include two new analog-inspired films: Cano Cafenol and Blanko Noir. Hipstamatic’s HipstaPaks are available for purchase through the app itself and usually cost $0.99.
Hipstamatic is also running a contest starting today, and calling on users to submit their own fashion shots using the Chunky lens for a chance to win prizes.
The Hipstamatic 200 update also brings some new functionality. There’s a new background image processing feature that allows users to take up to nine shots in succession without having to wait for each photo to be processed. There’s also a new “camera bag” organization system that lets users arrange their “gear” to make accessing lenses, flashes and films easier.
The Hipstamtic 200 update comes at an opportune time for the company. Camera app Instagram, widely seen as Hipstamatic’s number one competitor, recently made waves after announcing that it had raised $7 million in a round of fundraising and has plans to extend its app to the Android operating system. Hipstamatic has previously said that it has no plans to develop an app for Android.
