HTC One Mini and One Mini 2 won’t get update to Android Lollipop

As smartphones march forward in terms of specs and features, the average size continues to increase. For those who prefer Android phones on the smaller side but don’t want to sacrifice many features to get it, the HTC One Mini and Mini 2 were among the only options available. Unfortunately, owners of these phones are now left behind..

When asked when an update to the latest version of Android would be coming to the HTC One Mini 2, HTC tweeted that, “we determined that Lollipop on the One Mini 2 will not provide an optimal experience; it isn’t scheduled to receive the update.” Later, another tweet added that the original HTC One Mini would also not get the update.

This is somewhat understandable for the HTC One Mini – it was released nearly two years ago – but the HTC One Mini 2 is just barely a year old. Considering that it was just over a year ago when HTC announced guaranteed Android updates for two years for phones in the One series, this has plenty of HTC fans upset.

While HTC is busy not updating recently released phones, other manufacturers are promising updates to a number of older devices. Sony is updating phones from the Xperia Z onwards to Android 5.0 Lollipop, and Motorola is updating first generation Moto X and Moto G models in addition to later models.

Not only are phones with similar specs getting updates to Android 5.0, but when it was announced, Lollipop was designed to offer good performance on older devices. In some cases, phones perform better running Lollipop than the older KitKat.

For owners of either the HTC One Mini or One Mini 2, there is still some hope. HTC has yet to make a statement outside of the two tweets, so it may decide to pursue support of the older phones in the face of the backlash it is seeing.
