Rumors of a dual camera prove false as Huawei launches the G9 Plus

The Huawei Honor 8 seems to be making all the headlines for Huawei, but it’s not the only phone recently released by the Chinese company. In fact, Huawei has just quietly launched the new G9 Plus exclusively in China.

The phone is aimed at being a successor to the G9 Lite, which is also known as the P9 Lite in some markets. It features an all-metal unibody design with nicely rounded corners, and a single camera on the back — that’s right, it seems like rumors the phone would have a dual camera were unfounded.

The device features a 16MP rear-facing camera with both optical image stabilization and PDAF. For the selfie-lovers out there, the device also offers an 8MP front-facing camera.

Like other major Huawei releases, the device will also feature a fingerprint scanner on the back, and will ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow with EMUI 4.1 on top. Under the hood, there’s a fairly big 3,340mAh battery to power the device, and Huawei claims that battery will get the phone through two days of normal use. On the bottom, you’ll find a USB-C port.

When it comes to processing power, the phone comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, which replaces the aging Snapdragon 617 found in the G9. The device also features 32GB of internal storage, and options for either 3GB or 4GB of RAM, with prices starting at 2399 Yuan, which works out to around $360.

Sure, the specs of the phone aren’t spectacular, but they’re not bad either, especially for the price. Unfortunately, if you want to take advantage of that price and you live outside of the U.S., you may need to wait a while — there’s no word on availability outside of China at all, and it’s certainly possible that the phone will never make it stateside.

Huawei has launched the Huawei P50 and Huawei P50 Pro, its flagship smartphones for 2021, in China. Huawei has always captured hearts with its impressive camera systems, and the P50 Pro is no exception, plus there’s no chance you’ll mistake the phone for any other due to its distinctive design. However, neither P50 series phones have 5G connectivity, which is something of a shock for a top-spec 2021 smartphone.

The back of the Huawei P50 Pro is dominated by what looks like two large, circular cameras, but these are actually glass modules that hold multiple camera lenses. The unusual design certainly stands out. They contain a main 50-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), a 40MP monochrome camera, a 13MP ultra-wide camera, and a 64MP telephoto camera. The telephoto camera can apparently shoot at up to 200x zoom, but it's not known what optical zoom levels are featured.

The OnePlus Nord 2 is expected to launch with the same camera as the more powerful OnePlus Nord, as per a leak from Ishan Agarwal. The report claims that the camera will have the main 50-megapixel Sony 1MX766 camera as the OnePlus 9 Pro, with two other cameras of unknown resolution but speculated to be an 8MP and 2MP pair. If true, this would make the OnePlus Nord 2 OnePlus' second-best camera phone on the market upon release.

Reviewing the OnePlus 9 Pro, Digital Trends concluded that it offered "better photos than the OnePlus 8 Pro, and after the updates, it’s much more consistent too, with better balance, more color pop, and a lovely natural tone." The OnePlus 9, in comparison, was found to be "middling" and just short of the bar set by modern flagships.
