Samsung’s gorgeous Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S7 Edge have gone relatively unchallenged since their release, with the unusual dual-curved screen remaining a Samsung design standout. However, rumors are gathering this may change later in 2016, with both Huawei and Xiaomi both potentially working on devices with cascading edge displays.
The news comes from MyDrivers, quoting a source on the social network Weibo. It’s stated Xiaomi’s phone is currently known as the Mi Edge, or Mi Note Edge, while Huawei’s is the Edge Mate. Neither of these names — or the phones — are official, and they do sound like lawyer-bait, so prepare for changes if either actually make it out on sale.
However, these two rumored phones may not end up being that similar, and it’s mentioned that Xiaomi may use a flexible screen from LG to create its curved screen. If that’s correct, then the Mi Edge may end up more resembling LG’s G Flex 2 than the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. Huawei is said to be working on the same type of design as the Samsung models, with dual curved sides that effectively hide the bezels.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumors about a Huawei Edge-style phone. In September last year, another source claimed the company was targeting a first-half of 2016 launch for such a device. While there are still several months to go before we pass the midway point, the latest rumor says Huawei and Xiaomi are aiming for a September launch for their curved phones. This would fall into line with the annual IFA tech trade show in Berlin, an event favored by Samsung to show its latest Note model.
Xiaomi’s Mi 5 Pro, its latest smartphone release, closely resembles the Galaxy S7 already, and a Edge-style companion device sounds like a distinct possibility.
