Apple announces iCloud Drive, now works as a file system like Dropbox

Up until now, with iCloud, you could only store documents and access them on other iOS and Mac devices. Apple decided to change things up a bit at WWDC by announcing iCloud Drive. It makes Apple’s cloud management work more like Dropbox or Google Drive.

Essentially a working file system, iCloud Drive lets you sync only only your documents, but also your files and folders and have them accessible across multiple devices. Each app used with iCloud Drive has its own folder in the interface. You can access these folders through Finder and have them synced across OS X, iOS, and Windows.

It shouldn’t be a problem if you don’t use iCloud-enabled Macs. You’ll still be able to sync files and folders across your devices. iCloud Drive was announced as part of Apple’s upcoming OS X Yosemite, which will be a free download when it becomes available this fall. For those who might not want to wait that long, Apple announced a beta program for OS X Yosemite that will start this summer.

Apple’s iPhone and Watch design chief is leaving the company to work with Jony Ive, the man who led Apple’s design decisions until 2019 and who was key in creating the look of some of its most iconic products.
