Kindle Sparks Up The iPhone...for Free

Last month Amazon.com let the news slip that it was planning to bring its Kindle book platform to mobile phones—and now the company has made good on its promise, with the Kindle for iPhone application now available for free from the iTunes App Store. Kindle for iPhone enables iPhone and iPod touch owners to read Kindle books on their devices, with full support for WhisperSync so bookmarks and reading locations can be synchronized between a Kindle device and an iPhone. Users can also wirelessly transfer Kindle titles to the iPhone and iPod touch, and download Kindle books they’ve already purchased directly from Amazon.

“We are excited to bring the new Kindle application to Apple’s App Store and think customers are going to love how easy and fun it is to read their Kindle books on the iPhone and iPod touch,” said Amazon’s Kindle VP Ian Freed, in a statement. “Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch is a great way for customers to catch up on their current book wherever they are, like in line at the grocery store or between meetings.”

Early reports from users indicate Kindle for iPhone displays Kindle titles with strong readability on the iPhone, which could make the iPhone a significant growth market for Amazon’s Kindle titles. Amazon’s own Kindle readers are somewhat large to be taken everywhere—and need a light to read by in the dark, just like a real book. The iPhone, however, is more portable and helpfully backlit. Kindle for iPhone does not currently support magazines, newspapers, and blogs available to owners of Amazon’s Kindle devices.

Kindle for iPhone is available from the iTunes App Store as a free download. Kindle books from Amazon vary by titles, but new releases are often priced at $9.99.

The iPhone 16 Pro may set a new record for smartphone displays
An iPhone 15 Pro Max sitting upright, showing one of its home screens.

The iPhone 16 rumor mill will almost certainly pick up speed now that we’re just three months away from the expected reveal. The lastest information isn’t so much news as confirmation of one of the changes coming to the top-of-the-line iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Similar to previous rumors IceUniverse, says Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature the world’s thinnest smartphone bezels. Thinner bezels make sense when considering another long-running iPhone rumor: the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to offer bigger displays. Where the iPhone 16 Pro should see its display jump from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches versus the iPhone 15 Pro, the one on the iPhone 16 Pro Max is likely to increasefrom 6.7-inches on the iPhone 15 Pro Max to 6.9 inches.

I tried the new OnePlus 12 in white. It’s the Elvis Presley of Android phones
OnePlus 12 Glacial White held in hand against a marble surface.

We're long past the days when phones were distinguished solely based on their design. Despite more modern form factors such as foldables, the contemporary slab phone design reigns supreme -- because why reinvent the wheel when the current one gives you perfect traction on all roads? That said, phone brands have never stopped imagining newer design tweaks to help phones stand out, and a phone's color is a primary focus of attention.

Within the limited dimensions of the back panel, smartphone brands have persistently iterated different color choices, combinations, and textures over the past few years. We have seen trends such as textures under glass, gradients, vegan leather, and more. But OnePlus is taking a rather simple step of launching a new white color variant of the OnePlus 12. The Glacial White OnePlus 12 has been available in China since the phone was originally launched last December and is now moving out of the mainland as a limited edition.

The iPhone’s new AI features may come with a gigantic catch
An iPhone 15 Pro Max laying face-down outside, showing the Natural Titanium color.

Imagine paying a minimum of $999 for a new iPhone 14 Pro in 2022, only to discover that it can’t run the full iOS 18 experience in less than two years. It might sound dystopian, especially for a product known for its long shelf life that's largely the result of an industry-leading software update policy at Apple.

Yet, it seems that nightmarish surprise will be here in just over a week. Bloomberg recently reported on some crucial AI-driven features coming to iOS 18, with Siri being one of the main recipients of all that innovation. But iPhone users might have to pay a pretty price for it all.
