LG GD900

LG GD900In a market that seems to revert to using the same old tricks over and over again to imbue products with a sense of contemporary style, it’s refreshing to see one company doing something totally original. LG, a company not afraid to explore new concepts, has managed to bust out something unheard of yet again with the new GD900.

Initially known as the Crystal, the GD900 has a standard numeric keypad that slides out just like any other, with one important catch: It’s completely transparent. The screen, made of real glass and etched with numbers, uses capacitative touch-screen technology to detect finger presses, just like the iPhone. That also means it will support gestures and multi-touch. Drawing the letter M on it with your finger, for instance, will bring up the music player.

Like it last flagship model, the Arena, the GS900 will also make use of LG’s new S-Class user interface, which wraps all of the phone’s features around an easy-to-manipulate 3D cube, as displayed on its 3-inch touch screen.

Dimensions on the GD900 will also be suitably slim, with a depth of just 13.4mm, and LG has wrapped all edges in polished steel to lend it an air of stylish durability.

Not surprisingly, details on the new phone haven’t yet been announced, but LG has indicated that the phone will become available simultaneously in Asia and Europe in May. More details are expected to become available at this year’s CTIA Wireless expo.

LG’s smartphone departure allows OnePlus, Moto, and Nokia to win big in the U.S.
lg velvet review back edge

Several smartphone makers have capitalized on LG’s decision to no longer make smartphones, according to research into the U.S. phone market published by Counterpoint Research. It shows LG’s presence in the U.S. over the past year decreasing by 35%, giving OnePlus in particular the chance to massively increase its business.

Counterpoint Research notes that demand for affordable 5G smartphones and the ongoing component shortage has made it a difficult year for manufacturers, but four companies -- OnePlus, Motorola, Apple, and HMD Global -- have managed to turn these challenges into positives.

G-Shock’s newest GBA-900 connected watch is ideal for runners
casio g shock gba 900 news collection

Casio G-Shock continues to expand its connected sports watch range, and has announced the GBA-900 series, following on from the GBA-800 released in 2018. The new model retains the Bluetooth connection and adds in a selection of new features plus a newly designed watch face, but most importantly keeps the reasonable price tag.

The GBA-900 isn’t a full fitness tracker like those from Fitbit, Honor, and Xiaomi, so don’t expect varied workout tracking or a heart rate sensor. Instead it’s aimed primarily at casual runners and has a feature set to suit them. Connect to G-Shock’s Move app on your phone and the watch will make use of its GPS to track distance, which with measuring running time also allows your pace to be calculated. There’s an automatic lap feature, and a standard step tracker.
