Along with the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1320, Nokia has announced the Lumia 2520, its first Windows 8.1 RT tablet. Like the new Lumia phones the Lumia 2520 was leaked prior to announcement, just not in as much detail, but now we’ve got all the official information, we can see exactly what Nokia’s Surface 2 challenger is all about.
The 16:9 ratio, TrueColor IPS LCD screen measures 10.1-inches and has a 1080p HD resolution, which produces a pixel density of 218ppi. Nokia says the display has been designed to give the best possible readability of any tablet, even when viewed outdoors in bright sunlight. A Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with a clock speed of 2.2GHz powers the tablet, along with 2GB of RAM, and the latest Windows RT 8.1 software is installed. Inside RT 8.1 you’ll find Microsoft Office programs, plus Outlook RT, and various Nokia software features such asNokia Music, Mix Radio, and Here Maps. Nokia’s mapping software has both on and offline viewing, plus it can sync information across to your phone.
Nokia pushed the Lumia 2520’s camera abilities during the launch event, as it has teamed up with long-time partner Zeiss to produce a 6.7-megapixel rear camera tuned to take great low-light pictures, and shoot 1080p video. Plus, there’s a 2-megapixel front facing camera too. A total of 32GB internal storage is provided, and there is a microSD card slot to increase this by another 32GB. The new tablet comes with 4G LTE connectivity built-in, plus NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, and a micro-HDMI port.
Nokia also introduced the Power Keyboard accessory, which in addition to providing a physical keyboard as part of a wraparound protective cover, has a built-in battery to augment the Lumia 2520’s 8000mAh cell, which should add another five hours of use. It also has a trackpad for gesture controls, plus a pair of USB ports.
The Lumia 2520’s body will come in a glossy red or white color, or a matte cyan or black. It’s on sale before the end of the year in the U.S., UK, and Finland for $500, while the Power Keyboard has been priced at $150.
