Uber has been hit with a more than its fair share of negative press in recent months, but now it seems there’s at least one thing for Uber to celebrate. While the car service fights in court over whether its drivers are considered employees, it was announced that there are more Uber cars driving throughout New York City than there are yellow taxis, reports the New York Post.
According to the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC), 14,088 Uber cars are registered in New York City, compared to 13,587 yellow taxis. Because Uber has only been around since May 2011, this makes the statistic all the more impressive.
However, TLC is quick to note that, while there are more Uber cars than yellow taxis in the Big Apple, the number of yellow taxi rides vastly outnumber the number of Uber rides. According to TLC, there are roughly 440,000 yellow taxi rides in New York City, as opposed to just 20,000 to 30,000 Uber rides. This disparity is attributed to Uber drivers driving for 1-15 hours per week.
Even so, in the midst of Uber being banned in Germany for a second time and having driver information compromised, thanks to a cyberattack, Uber will gladly take this bit of good press.
