Motorola’s latest Moto Mod Style Shells are constructed from Gorilla Glass

When Motorola first announced its Moto Z line and accompanying Moto Mods in 2016, it sounded like a pretty risky bet for consumers. Who would want to spend money on a line of magnetic accessories that are tethered to one device?

Well, as the Moto Z line comes up on its two-year anniversary, it appears those concerns were largely unfounded. This week, the company announced its newest collection of Moto Mod Style Shells. The Style Shells are just the latest addition to Motorola’s growing collection of Moto Mods, and are aimed at allowing you to customize your phone without adding the extra bulk of a case.

The new Moto Mods Style Shells are constructed entirely of Gorilla Glass and come in five different festive and quirky designs. Joining Motorola’s current lineup of nylon Style Shells, the new collection offers a more fashion-forward selection. Of course, the interesting designs come at a price — you’ll have to shell out $30 to get one for yourself, which is up from the $20 price tag on the nylon shells.

According to Motorola, making the mods out of Gorilla Glass essentially causes them to be “damage resistant,” but in the end, even though Gorilla Glass is pretty tough, its still glass. If you end up with one of these mods, we would recommend still being careful to avoid any drops.

The new lineup shows that Moto Mods can be pretty versatile. While some people prefer to use functional Mods, they’re also a great opportunity to customize the look of your device. When it comes to functional Mods, we’ve seen quite a few — including a projector, Hasselblad camera mod, and more. At CES, the company unveiled even more Mods, like the Vital Mod, which allows users to track five vital signs in a matter of only a few minutes. Sure, it’s probably not something that everyone needs — but it could be very helpful to those that want to keep a close eye on their health.

Motorola’s new Moto G Power (2022) keeps long battery life, adds better camera

The Moto G Power (2022) is officially the newest part of Motorola's Moto G family, and the successor to the Moto G Power (2021) that we reviewed early this year. As our review of the earlier model noted, all the key selling points are here, like the long-lasting three-day battery life, huge display, and sturdy design. But on top of that, Motorola also appears to have addressed our complaints about the weak camera performance and mediocre panel, by significantly beefing up both, though it still hasn't brought 5G to the device likely to keep it under $200.

To start with, the new G Power features a 6.5-inch 1600 x 720 IPS display with a 90Hz refresh rate, meaning everything will be smoother than last year's 60Hz panel. It's still not really a bump up from 720p -- 1080p would have been nice given the big screen, but it'll still feel a lot better to use. In terms of weight and dimensions, it's about the same size and tips the scale at about 203 grams. The design is fairly sturdy and is IP52 water-repellent, however, it is not technically waterproof, so don't fully immerse it.

The Moto Watch 100 could be Motorola’s lightest smartwatch yet

A new Motorola smartwatch is on its way as renders and specs of the Moto Watch 100 leaked online in advance of its anticipated launch. CE Brands, the current owner of Motorola-branded smartwatches, has already said it has completed work on a Moto Watch 100, which is tipped to be an affordable offering.

The latest development comes from 91Mobiles. The publication has shared renders and purported specs of the upcoming Moto Watch 100. It reveals a circular display with a minimalistic design. The right edge seems to house two buttons with a metallic finish, while the watch body could have a matte finish. It might appear from the renders that the Moto Watch 100 could sport a rotating bezel, but the report says the device will not have that feature.

The Moto G Pure might be Motorola’s most affordable entry-level phone yet

Motorola is back with a new entry-level unlocked phone -- the Moto G Pure. Despite not having any particularly unique features to it, the $160 G Pure does excel at being a fantastic budget phone, as it falls in the same price range as the aging Moto E. According to Motorola, the G Pure is the new entry point for its budget lineup, though not technically a direct replacement of the Moto E.

The phone is only available in a Deep Indigo color option, which looks like a light black to our eyes. Sporting a 6.5-inch HD+ Max Vision 1600 x 720 display, the Moto G Pure has a resolution of 269 pixels per inch. It weighs about 188 grams. Its water-repellent design is accented with a subtle fingerprint scanner on the Motorola logo, though it's important to note that it's not waterproof.
