Here’s what a photo from a 200MP smartphone camera looks like

There’s been plenty of speculation about the Motorola X30 Pro as of late, and a new photo confirms that the upcoming smartphone’s camera is as impressive as Motorola has been making it sound.

The X30 Pro, also known as the Edge 30 Ultra, is equipped with a 200-megapixel camera on its rear, making it one of the most impressive photography-focused smartphones in the industry. While Motorola has talked a big game about the quality of the pictures we can expect the X30 to produce, a new photo means we’re finally seeing them with our own eyes.

Posted to the Chinese blogging site Weibo, General Manager of Motorola China, Chen Jin, showed off a single image taken with the 200MP camera. Even with the knowledge that the photo was compressed to go up on the website, it’s still a staggeringly good-looking shot. The picture is of a bouquet of flowers, so you’re able to zoom in and see a lot of the minute details of the plants.

Although this is just a singular image, and we’ve yet to see the X30 officially in action, the photograph is a nice snapshot look into what can be expected of the X30 Pro’s camera when it launches later this month. With how important the camera lenses on phones have become over the last several years, it’s exciting to see a device that’s doubling down on quality and making photography the main focus.

While photographers should certainly be excited about the X30 Pro, there’s still one concern when it comes to storage. The image posted to Weibo is over 13MB,  which means that (hopefully) the X30 Pro will have some large internal storage options. Otherwise, it’ll get full quickly. This is always a concern when it comes to photography-focused devices, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed that Motorola is able to provide solid storage options here.

There’s still no official word on when we can expect the smartphone to launch. However, based on previous leaks, it seems as if it’ll be for sale later this month in China and coming to the West in mid to late August. If that’s the case, then expect to see more image samples from the X30 Pro within the next few weeks. Hopefully, future samples won’t be limited by compression so that we can see exactly what Motorola has up its sleeves.

Xiaomi’s new phone has a 200MP camera — and its photos are stunning
Holding the Xiaomi 12T Pro to take a photo.

There was a time when phones with 48-megapixel cameras sounded impressive, and when some of our favorite camera phones still “only” have 12 megapixels today. But for the new 12T Pro, Xiaomi has decided 12, 48, or even 108 megapixels isn’t the headline number it wants — and has therefore used Samsung’s ISOCELL HP1 200-megapixel camera instead.
Taking photos with a 200MP camera
Samsung announced the ISOCELL HP1 sensor in 2021, and the Xiaomi 12T Pro is the first phone to use it. There’s also plenty of speculation it may also be a major feature on the future Galaxy S23 smartphone range. Until now, we’ve only seen a massive photo of a cat teasing the camera’s ability, so what’s it like in real life?

Before we talk about the photos, you need to know the size of the 200MP photos taken by the Xiaomi 12T Pro. Yes, it is possible to shoot in maximum resolution, but by default, the camera takes 12MP photos using 4-into-1 pixel binning technology. Beware, though — the 200MP mode photos are massive. We’re talking 16,384 pixels by 12,288 pixels and, on average, about 55MB each. Tap the shutter button, and there is a slight pause while the photo is processed, but it’s not all that different from using the regular camera mode. The 200MP photos I’ve taken have a lovely balance, with vibrant colors and great exposure, and are sometimes even better looking than the equivalent 12MP photos taken by the phone.

This is the Moto X30 Pro, Motorola’s 200MP smartphone camera beast
Motorola X30 Pro official render

Samsung recently wowed us with a stunning photo sample captured by its 200-megapixel smartphone camera sensor, but it won’t be the first brand to put that massive sensor on one of its Galaxy phones. Instead, those bragging rights will go to Motorola, thanks to its upcoming X30 Pro flagship.

Taking to its official Weibo social handle in China, Motorola has confirmed that the X30 Pro will offer a 200-megapixel primary camera. Plus, it will be optically stabilized as well. The sensor size is 1/1.22-inch, which is not too shabby at all.

Motorola’s next flagship phone will have a truly unusual camera system
Motorola Frontier 2022

Motorola today teased the X30 Pro, its next big flagship smartphone. Formerly rumored as the 200-megapixel-equipped Motorola Frontier, the company shared that it will be a camera-focused phone, and it's expected to launch next month.

Though rumors have focused on the pixel count of the camera, Motorola emphasized the focal lengths — specifically, putting a lot of attention on the zoom capabilities. You'll find a triple camera layout on this phone with 35mm, a 50mm, and an 85mm telephoto lens forming the basis of its camera system. This means that there won't be any ultra-wide camera lens as has become common, but you'll have the best portrait camera on the market (at least on paper). It's unusual, but also a potential way for the X30 Pro's cameras to stand out.
