Big, bold, and badass: Say goodbye to the Nexus 6

Smartphones are a dime a dozen, and there’s no room in the market for last year’s model. And the Nexus 6? So 2014.

A behemoth of a phone, the Nexus 6 has quietly been laid to rest from the Google Store. If you head over to the Phones section on the website, you’ll only see the Nexus 5X and the 6P — as if the Nexus 6 never existed.

You can still find the Nexus 6 page via a Google search, but as soon as it loads you’ll see red text: “The Nexus 6 is no longer available for purchase.” Soon, this page will disappear, just like the device itself.

Don’t fret, though. If you were looking to grab the Nexus 6 — well, you should have on Black Friday when the 32GB version was $199 on Amazon. All the same, you can still grab it at various other retailers like eBay or Amazon for $350 or lower. Oddly, Motorola is still selling the nearly 6-inch device for $500.

Has the product been officially discontinued? Is Google out of stock? We’ve reached out to the search giant for a comment.

When the Nexus 6 was unveiled in 2014, we gave it a solid 4 out of 5. Sure it’s big — sometimes too big to hold — and expensive, but it’s also beautiful, powerful, and has a brilliant display. The Motorola-built device is Google’s largest Nexus device, even to date it’s bigger than the Nexus 6P. It launched alongside the release of Android 5.0 Lollipop, and brought Google’s Material Design with it. It was the first phone that was compatible with Google’s new mobile Internet service, but Project Fi has since expanded to the 5X and 6P.

While the device ushered in a new stage for Android and Google, the company is clearly done with it. Say goodbye to a mammoth of a phone that was the Nexus 6.

The Google Pixel 6 Pro doesn’t deserve its bad reputation
Pixel 6 Pro in the pocket

The Google Pixel 6 Pro is not having the best month, publicity-wise. A broken software update in December 2021 caused problems before it was halted, but this only compounded the issues owners were already apparently having with the phone. Check Twitter, Reddit, and other online spaces, and you’ll find what appears to be plenty of disgruntled Pixel 6 owners voicing their disappointment with the device, including several high-profile YouTubers.

Has Google’s darling Pixel fallen from grace? Are we ready to strip it of its “Editor’s Choice” badge in our review? No, not yet. While people clearly have legitimate gripes about the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, there are also many who don’t have any issues with the phone at all. I know, because I’m one of them.
What’s the problem?
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro’s Android 12 software seems to be the root of the now widely discussed problems, which were made worse by Google pausing the December software update due to reports of it causing calls to be dropped on some devices. A new software update with a fix has been promised for late January. But frustrations have started to push owners over the edge.

Google Pixel 6 Pro vs. Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra
Side of the Google Pixel 6 Pro.

It seems Google is tired of having a reputation for producing only midrange phones with great cameras. At least, this is the impression created by the recently released Google Pixel 6 Pro, a flagship smartphone that takes everything great about previous Pixels and adds a range of premium features. These include the powerful Google Tensor processor, a generous 5,003mAh battery, a new triple-lens rear camera setup, and an impressively vibrant 6.71-inch AMOLED display.

Combined with the same great software experience, the Pixel 6 Pro is a decidedly competitive smartphone. Of course, it has competitors, with its main Android rival being the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. This flagship phone improves on its predecessors in several key areas, offering an appealing new design, a jaw-dropping screen, and a very effective camera.

The rear panel of the Google Pixel 6 Pro.

It has almost become a custom for Google to debut several exclusive features every time it announces new Pixel smartphones. This year, for example, we saw the company revamp the popular At a Glance option with a host of new feature additions, some of which are already live on the Pixel 6 series. Now, it seems there are more features on the way.

The usually trustworthy folks at 9to5Google recently performed an APK teardown of the beta version of the Android System Intelligence app for the Pixel 6 series. After closely examining the various lines of code within the APK, they were able to deduce that Google intends to soon enhance the At a Glance feature with several new capabilities.
