Bragi is suing OnePlus in the EU and the U.S. over its use of the word ‘dash’

Audio company Bragi is suing OnePlus over the word 'dash'

Although it has filed a trademark application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) to change the name of its Dash Charge charging system to “Warp Charge,” OnePlus is still being sued by audio company Bragi.

The lawsuit has been filed in the European Union, and concerns the use of the word “dash” in OnePlus’s Dash Charger and the similarities with Bragi’s The Dash Pro headset and other products in The Dash range. This lawsuit isn’t a one-off, either — Bragi has filed another lawsuit against OnePlus over the same issue in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.

OnePlus has been avoiding use of the term “Dash Charge” in its promotional material and software ever since it was denied a trademark in the EU in March due to similarities to other products. The trademark for “Warp Charge” was submitted to the EUIPO on July 13, but don’t expect an answer quickly. The trademark application for Dash Charge was begun when the OnePlus 3 was released in 2016, and the agency only got around to denying the application in March of this year.

Of course, it’s not a given that the trademark will be accepted yet, so it would be unwise for OnePlus to start the lengthy and expensive process of re-merchandising until the application is complete — but unless some major players within a similar industry pop up with another valid claim to the “Warp Charge” name, then it’s likely that the trademark will be accepted. We doubt a miniatures shop in Halifax has enough of a claim to block OnePlus here.

The charging method formerly known as Dash Charge has a strong history. It’s based on the VOOC charging tech developed by OnePlus’ owner, OPPO, and it increases ampage, rather than voltage, to deliver more power to a device. It’s considered one of the fastest methods of fast charging out there, and OnePlus was so proud of this feature that it designed an entire marketing campaign around it for the launch of the OnePlus 3T.

While the rejection of a trademark application didn’t hurt OnePlus too much, being sued by Bragi may have a larger impact.

OnePlus surprises us with dazzling Android tablet and smartwatch
A press image of the OnePlus Watch 2 Nordic Blue edition.

OnePlus has launched a new Android tablet and a desirable special edition of the OnePlus Watch 2, both in beautiful color schemes that make us want them both right now. Unfortunately, that won't be easy if you live in the U.S.. The company has announced the OnePlus Pad Go tablet and OnePlus Watch 2 Nordic Blue edition smartwatch at an event in Helsinki, Finland, and both are currently only destined for a European release.

If you recognize the OnePlus Pad Go's name , it’s because the tablet was released in India last year, and it comes in the same stunning Twin Mint color scheme, which is as trendy as it gets. Although the company hasn't been forthcoming with all the details about the tablet, the specifications are unlikely to have changed from the model released in India. It has an 11.3-inch screen with a 2.4K (that’s 2408 x 1720 pixels) resolution, which it claims is currently the highest available on an Android tablet, and a 90Hz refresh rate.

I did a OnePlus 12 vs. OnePlus 12R camera test, and there’s a big difference
Genshin Impact Edition OnePlus 12R (left) and Flowy Emerald OnePlus 12.

OnePlus has had a very solid start to 2024 with the release of the OnePlus 12 and the OnePlus 12R. While both phones look very similar, one is a flagship, while the other is a more budget-friendly option with slightly lesser specs.

Though both devices' cameras appear similar at first glance, they’re actually quite different. In addition to different specs, only the OnePlus 12 has Hasselblad branding, meaning that it has better color calibration, white balance and exposure, and more. In short, photos you take with the OnePlus 12’s Hasselblad camera are probably going to look better.

The OnePlus 12 is the OnePlus phone I’ve been waiting for
A person holding the OnePlus 12.

Since it arrived, the OnePlus 12 has been sitting on a shelf, unused, behind my desk. Apart from a few days when I tested out the camera, battery, and performance, I haven't had a chance to really dig into the phone.

Don’t mistake this for indifference, though. I’ve been itching to use it for more than just those early few days, but due to various reasons, it hasn’t been possible until now. Was it worth the wait?
Why did it have to wait?
