Get closer: New smartphone camera tech from Oppo zooming to MWC

Oppo, the Chinese smartphone brand known for its camera phones, will be at Mobile World Congress at the end of this month, to show a new technology it’s calling “5x.” What’s 5x? Oppo’s not telling us, but from the way the firm describes it, we’re looking at a new technology, rather than just a new smartphone called the 5x. Probably best, as that’s just going to get confusing.

“Go 5x further,” says the Oppo invitation to see the tech at MWC, adding that it’s, “smartphone photography technology that will give users unprecedented ability to capture highly detailed images.” It has been in development for a year, and is now ready to be shown off to the public. Oppo has a strong photographic background, after it captured many headlines with its rotating camera modules and massive-megapixel selfie cams, and the company even takes the dubious honor of being the first to feature a pre-installed beautification mode on a smartphone.

What could 5x be? Its name — and the “So close you can feel it” tagline — suggests something to do with camera zoom, a hot trend in smartphones at the moment. If it refers to a 5x zoom on a phone, and is optical without a massive lens extension, then it would surpass Apple’s 2x zoom on the iPhone 7 Plus, and Asus’ 2.3x zoom on the Zenfone 3 Zoom. However, this is only speculation, and we’ll have to wait and see what Oppo reveals on the day.

Last year Oppo also used Mobile World Congress to showcase some exciting technology. It demonstrated the next generation of its proprietary battery fast-charging system, which could take a cell from zero to 100 percent in just 15 minutes, plus a new image stabilization system for smartphone cameras. However, neither of these have since been made available in an Oppo smartphone, despite the intention to have them available before the end of last year.

While we’re excited to see Oppo’s new 5x technology, whatever it may end up being, we’re also wary that it may be an early prototype — and therefore not something we should expect to use in the real world any time soon.

The next big smartphone release from Oppo is coming on February 24. The company has confirmed the Find X5 series will be revealed at 11 a.m. GMT on that day, which is 6 a.m. ET and 3 a.m. PT, so those not in the U.K. will need to be up bright and early to catch the announcement event when it streams live on YouTube.

Oppo’s early warning also officially tells us the name of its next flagship phones, the Find X5. The phones will follow the Find X3 series, released in early 2021. It seems Oppo has decided to avoid the number four, likely due to it being considered bad luck in China. Although we don’t know how many phones will make up the Find X5 series, expect a standard Find X5 to join the Find X5 Pro, and probably a Find X5 Lite.

Oppo's flagship Find X3 Pro was released in March 2021 to great reviews. Now, the next device rumored to be the Oppo Find X5 Pro is expected to release this March. Sources have suggested that it will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, which is Snapdragon's most powerful processor yet.

Interestingly, it seems likely that there will be no Oppo Find X4 Pro as the number 4 is not considered to be lucky in Chinese. The number is considered to be nearly homophonous to the word "death" in Cantonese. The details of the upcoming handset were leaked by Digital Chat Station and Abhishek Yadav, two well-known tipsters in the digital arena. Meanwhile, a tipster called OnLeaks, shared the first photos of the phone below.

Oppo has announced the MariSilicon X, its first ]Neural Processing Unit (NPU) dedicated to improving the speed and performance of the Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) used for its smartphone cameras. Built using a 6nm process, the MariSilicon X is designed to take away the heavy lifting that A.I. needs from the phone’s Central Processing Unit (CPU), to improve overall camera performance, particularly in lowlight video.

While Oppo has announced the MariSilicon X now, you won’t see it in action until next year, as the company says the next Find X flagship smartphone will be the first to feature the chip, and it won't be revealed until early 2022. This is exciting as Oppo made one of the best cameras we saw during 2021 with the Find X3 Pro, so we look forward to seeing how the new NPU improves it even further.
