Palm Grasps for Cash by Remarketing 18.5M Shares

Palm’s upcoming Pre may be its ticket to resurgence in the smartphone market, but as the months tick by to its launch, the cash-strapped company has been grasping to survive. On Monday, it executed another move to generate cash by remarketing 18.5 million common shares originally acquired by the investment firm Elevation Partners back in January.

Under the conditions of the remarketing, Elevation will recoup the $49 million originally paid for the shares, and Palm will receive all net proceeds above that amount. If all 18.5 million shares were to sell at Monday’s price of $6.21 per share, that would make them valued at nearly $115 million dollars, leaving $66 million leftover from the sale for Palm.

According to Palm’s press release, funds raised by the remarketing, “would be used to strengthen Palm’s working capital position and to further bolster the resources Palm is devoting to the launch of the Palm Pre and future product-development efforts.”

Elevation Partners has the right to purchase an additional 2.8 million common shares to cover over-allotments, and is expected to reinvest the $49 million from the remarketing in public shares of Palm.

Poco Global, the smartphone company best known for high-performance, low-cost phones like the Poco F1 and Poco F2 Pro, has announced the Poco M3 Pro 5G. The new phone is the latest in a growing trend of cheap 5G phones, made possible by using competitively priced processors like the MediaTek Dimensity 700, which powers the Poco M3 Pro 5G and the recently announced Realme 8 5G.

It’s the first time Poco has worked with MediaTek, which is working hard to increase its influence in 5G. The Dimensity 700 is a 2.2GHz octa-core chip built using a 7mn process, and although not MediaTek’s flagship 5G chip, is still designed to cope with games, video, and other power-intensive activities. In the M3 Pro 5G, it’s paired to either 4GB or 6GB of RAM, which come with 64GB or 128GB of storage space respectively.

After months of rumors, Apple has taken the wraps off of a new iPad Pro at the Apple Spring Loaded 2021 event. The new iPad Pro models keep the overall design of previous-generation models, however, they get improved performance thanks to the inclusion of the same M1 chip that's found in Apple's recent Mac models.

The boost in performance means that the iPad Pro is even more suitable for things like video editing and audio production, at least for on-the-go workflows.

As rumored, the iPad Pro not only offers improved performance but also includes a radically improved display. The new display uses Mini LED technology, which means that it should be able to deliver much deeper black levels. It also offers 1,600-nit peak brightness and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Apple calls the package as a whole the Liquid Retina XDR display. Unfortunately, it seems as though this tech is only available on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro -- not on the smaller 11-inch device. It's unclear if the 11-inch device gets any of the improvements on offer, or if it keeps the same display as the previous-generation iPad Pro.

MediaTek’s new M80 modem packs in Sub-6 and mmWave 5G

MediaTek has announced the M80 5G modem, its first to combine both Sub-6 and mmWave 5G technologies, which is important if it’s to make a greater impact on the U.S. in the future. Previously, MediaTek’s M70 modem, which is found in its Dimensity mobile processors, only supported Sub-6 networks, and was used inside the T-Mobile version of the LG Velvet.

The M80 modem is capable of connecting to standalone (SA) and non-stand-alone (NSA) 5G signals at a maximum of 7.67Gbps download and 3.76Gbps upload. The modem is suitable for 5G-capable networks all over the world, supports dual-5G SIMs and technology including dual Voice over New Radio (VoNR), and will connect to 4G LTE Cat-19 networks too.
