Panasonic says Toughbook Android tablet coming this year

Panasonic’s Toughbook line is known for putting ruggedized notebook computers in the hands of field workers, first responders, emergency personnel, and other market segments were the ability to take more than casual bumps and knocks is of the utmost importance. Today, the company announced (PDF) it plans to bring an “enterprise-grade” Android tablet to its Toughbook line—and the device will be available later this year.

“Enterprise customers are very interested in the tablet market, but have been frustrated by the lack of appropriate solutions,” said Panasonic Solutions president Rance Poehler, in a statement. “The vast majority of tablet devices—regardless of the OS—are engineered for consumers and don’t offer appropriate levels of security and durability or the functionality needed for business use.”

Although Panasonic hasn’t released full specs, the company says its tablet will sport a non-glossy, daylight-viewable 10.1-inch XGA display, support for an active stylus to capture signatures and other writing—the tablet will tuck into the back panel of the device. The Toughbook tablet will also sport GPS, optional embedded 3G/4G mobile broadband, and a rugged build consistent with other Toughbook products&including ingress protection. The device will also feature embedded hardware-enabled security capabilities.

Panasonic hasn’t announced any additional configuration information (including what version of Android the tablet will run), or revealed any pricing details. The company says the Toughbook tablet will be available in the fourth quarter of 2011.

It's been almost a year since the Google Pixel Tablet went up for preorder, leading many Android tablet fans to wonder when the inevitable Pixel Tablet 2 will arrive.
