Samsung cites 2001: A Space Odyssey in defense against Apple

2001 Space Odyssey Samsung vs AppleThe Apple vs. Samsung court soap opera has taken a trip in a time machine to the year 1968. Samsung filed its opposition to Apple’s injunction in the United States, and in doing so cited Stanley Kubricks’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Samsung is attempting to prove to the court that the design of a tablet computer did not originate at Apple.

Samsung’s evidence states that the device pictured shares an overall rectangular shape, a dominant display, narrow borders, flat front surface, and a thin form factor. Which are all traits that both Apple’s iPad, and Samsung’s Tab 10.1 share.  Kubrick’s film has always been considered one of the best Sci-Fi movies of all time, and this court case is showing just how ahead of its time the movie truly was.

Apple’s case against Samsung has been a roller coaster, and it seems as though it is only getting warmed up. In Apple’s case in Germany it appears as though Apple submitted an edited picture of a Samsung tablet. Samsung’s tablet was altered to appear to be shaped more like the iPad. Apple has also been accused of doctoring a picture of Samsung’s Galaxy S phone so that it looks more like an iPhone. It’s hard to tell if the evidence provided by Samsung will be effective at all in this case, but it can’t be any worse than submitted altered pictures as evidence.

As of right now the Samsung Tab 10.1 is currently for sale in the United States, and the Galaxy S II phones are rumored to be coming in October. Only time will tell if Apple will be able to block either device in the United States.

It very entertaining to see a movie that is over 40 years old cited in a court case focused on two of the most advanced computing devices available.

The 6 best tablets for watching movies in 2024
Two iPad Pro tablets next to each other against a black background. Both have Apple's Magic Keyboard case.

Tablets are incredibly versatile devices, allowing you to surf the web, check your emails, or play games without the need for a larger (and clunkier) laptop. But one of the most popular ways to use a tablet is as a screen for your favorite movies and TV shows. Since they're slim enough to pack into a backpack and light enough to prop up while laying in bed or on the couch, tablets are a great way to catch up on your favorite shows.

However, not all tablets are great for watching movies and TV shows. Some are built with lackluster displays that can't capture the nuances of important scenes, while others are cheap and unreliable – making them a poor long-term investment. That can make it difficult to shop for the best tablets for watching movies, as there are hundreds of products vying for your attention. But if you know where to look, it's easy to find a premium tablet that'll serve you well for years.

Why I ditched my iPhone 15 Pro for the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro in hand.

This is not another “lifelong iPhone user tries Android” story. I use and review all kinds of phones, and I prefer the flexibility of Android. That said, I’ve been on the iPhone 15 Pro since its launch — for two reasons. First, I had been getting the iPhone 14 Pro Max-level battery life on it. Second, I like the stability of social media apps like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). But the experience has been downgrading for a while now.

Samsung's "AI phone," the Galaxy S24 Ultra, tackles these two issues and gives me some extra features that I didn’t think would be important for me. It’s been a surprisingly fun experience. Here’s why I shifted to the Galaxy S24 Ultra from the iPhone 15 Pro and decided to stay on it. And no, it has nothing to do with AI.
Updates have ruined the iPhone 15 Pro
