Samsung unveils the budget-friendly Galaxy On5 Pro and Galaxy On7 Pro

Samsung might have one foot firmly entrenched in high-end territory, as far as phones are concerned, but the company has its other foot in budget territory. That is why Samsung unveiled the Galaxy On5 and Galaxy On7 in October, and that is why the company just released upgrades to both phones.

Starting with the Galaxy On5 Pro, the phone features a 5-inch, 1,280 x 720 pixel resolution display, with a 5-megapixel selfie shooter above it and an 8MP main camera around back. Similar to the Galaxy Note 4, the Galaxy On5 Pro’s removable back is made of a faux leather material, with a 2,600mAh battery and a MicroSD card slot beneath that cover.

Powering the Galaxy On5 Pro is a 1.3GHz quad-core Exynos 3475 chipset and 2GB RAM, which should be enough to give the phone some oomph when it comes to everyday activities. Elsewhere, the phone features dual-SIM capabilities, as well as a standard Micro USB port and 4G LTE. Unfortunately, the home button does not double as a fingerprint scanner, but given the Galaxy On5 Pro’s budget status, that is not much of a surprise.

Moving on to the Galaxy On7 Pro, the phone steps up to a 5.5-inch, 1,280 x 720 resolution display, with a 5MP front-facing camera and a 13MP primary shooter. The Galaxy On7 Pro also features the same faux leather rear cover as its smaller sibling.

A 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset and 2GB RAM power the phone, with the chipset already proving its usefulness by powering phones such as the Moto G (2015) and the Marshall London. A MicroSD card slot augments the 16GB of native storage, while a 3,000mAh battery keeps the lights on. Finally, both SIM slots are 4G LTE-enabled.

Finally, both phones run Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

If the internals of both the Galaxy On5 Pro and Galaxy On7 Pro seem familiar, that is because the only differences between the two phones and their older non-pro versions are the increased RAM (1.5GB vs. 2GB) and native storage (8GB vs. 16GB). The Galaxy On5 Pro is currently available in black and gold for 9,190 rupees ($137), while the Galaxy On7 Pro is available in the same colors for 11,190 rupees ($167), with both phones only available in India as of this writing.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 may fix my biggest issue with the Z Fold 5
A person holding the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, seen from the side.

I ordered my first folding smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, in February of this year. I was excited, but I was also more than a little apprehensive. This was an entirely new form factor for me, as I'd never used a folding smartphone before. I'd used phones, I'd used tablets, but I'd never used both of them at the same time.

At the start of my experience, I was worried principally about how much I'd use the phone's headline feature: the big inner display. After all, if I didn't end up using it, didn't that defeat the whole point of the device?
