Samsung reveals another incentive to buy a Galaxy S5: $500-worth of freebies

One of the many new aspects of the Galaxy S5 revealed in quick-fire fashion during the MWC 2014 launch event was Galaxy Gifts, described as a way for S5 owners to get their hands on premium content for free. Now the dust has settled on the S5’s announcement, Samsung has provided more details on Galaxy Gifts, with a complete list of the free software owners will receive.

The total value is over $500, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be getting around 500 $1 apps. Instead, Samsung has gathered up a selection of high value software treats, most of which are long-term subscriptions to sites and services. Let’s take a closer look at what’s on offer.

A six month subscription to The Wall Street Journal tops the list in terms of dollar-value at $160, followed by three months of being a LinkedIn Premium member for free, something which would usually cost $75. Samsung has signed Box to provide some cloud storage space, and S5 owners will get 50GB for six months included with the phone, worth $60. Additionally, Bitcasa provides 1TB for three months.

The list continues with three months of Evernote’s Premium Service, a twelve month subscription to Bloomberg Businessweek +, and a few single purchase apps such as Flick Dat and EasilyDo Pro.

Samsung pushed the Galaxy S5’s health and fitness features hard at MWC, and there are several apps on offer which tie into this aspect. For example, there’s a year of RunKeeper’s premium service, six months of Map My Fitness, and a twelve month subscription to Lark. The latter uses data gathered from your phone’s sensors to offer advice on how to become fitter and healthier. Finally, the six months of workouts provided by Skimble should toughen you up.

When we originally reviewed the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9, our conclusion was that it was a hard tablet to recommend, primarily because it was outrageously expensive, especially since the iPad Pro is cheaper. That said, with the discount and potential trade-in credit, the price isn't so bad, and some of the other excellent features start to stand out, such as the truly massive 14.6-inch screen, which is bigger than the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Of course, that does come with its own problem, which is that it's pretty heavy to hold, especially for long periods, although if you use it with a case that has a stand, that issue can be substantially mitigated.

For example, it has become a lot thinner than previous iterations, making it a lot easier to carry in your pocket without feeling like you're carrying a literal brick, and on top of that, the hinges have been improved to be even more quiet and long-lasting.
