The IFA technology trade show begins next month in Berlin, and Samsung will hold a press event the day before the doors open. This won’t be just any Samsung event either, but another of its Unpacked gatherings, where we’re usually treated to a new version of a high-end device. Traditionally, Samsung has revealed a Galaxy Note at IFA, and we’re not expecting things to change this year.
Updated on 08-06-2014 by Andy Boxall: Samsung has started sending out official invitations to the event, and dropped a heavy hint we’ll be seeing a new Galaxy Note on the day.
Samsung’s last Unpacked event was at Mobile World Congress, where it revealed the Galaxy S5, the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches, and the Gear Fit wristband. At Unpacked Episode 2, set to take place on September 3 in Berlin, with spin-off events in Beijing and New York, the Galaxy Note 4 should take center stage.
Samsung’s official invitation says “Ready? Note the Date,” with an exclamation mark that looks suspiciously like a stylus. If that’s not enough of a hint, there’s also a drawing of Samsung’s Air Command menu, a major user interface feature accessed using the stylus, seen on the Galaxy Note 3.

If the rumors are correct the Note 4 is going to be the most technically impressive Note yet. How impressive? It could be Samsung’s response to the LG G3, and boast a big 5.7-inch Super AMOLED screen with a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution. Powering this monstrous display could be the new Snapdragon 805 processor, or one of Samsung’s own Exynos octa-core chips, depending on where the phone is released. Other possible features include the introduction of eye-scanning technology, and even a cutting edge new design.
Last year, Samsung launched the Galaxy Gear smartwatch alongside the Note 3, and there are rumors pointing to another piece of wearable technology showing up at IFA. This time, it may be Samsung’s Google Glass challenger, currently known under several codenames, including Gear Glass.
According to an event schedule, Unpacked 2 2014 will begin at 2 p.m. local time on September 3, so Samsung is giving us plenty of warning, meaning we’re probably in store for some teaser videos between now and then. We’ll keep you updated.
