Samsung’s sizable line-up of Galaxy tablets has just become a little larger with the launch on Friday of the Galaxy Tab 4 Education, essentially a modified version of its consumer-oriented Tab 4 device.

As its name cleverly suggests, this 10.1-inch slate is aimed at schools and, according to Samsung, has been created to address the unique needs of K-12 classrooms, “specifically durability, manageability, and access to digital learning resources.”

The $370 tablet, which was first announced back in January, is certainly a rugged-looking number which, with its chunky case and tough Corning Gorilla Glass, should be able to comfortably withstand all manner of classroom calamities.

The Android 4.4 KitKat device comes with a 1280 x 800 display, 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 16GB of storage expandable to 64GB with a microSD card, 1.5GB of RAM, 10 hours of battery life, and rear- and front-facing cameras.

Optional accessories include a USB keyboard, AllShare Cast for wireless mirroring of content to displays, and charging carts for easy classroom storage.

Integrating with Google Play for Education, the new device gives educators the opportunity to make the most of a varied selection of teacher-approved apps, books and videos aimed at providing students with a more stimulating learning experience.

Samsung executive Tod Pike said the tablet is a step toward the company’s vision of empowering educators “with simple, intuitive management tools to foster a more interactive and effective learning environment.”

The company is also hoping its new education-focused slate will help it to establish itself in a fast-growing market, with US schools forecast to purchase around 3.5 million tablets this year alone.
