Skagen’s new hybrid smartwatch has an e-ink screen and mechanical hands

Skagen has introduced its first hybrid smartwatch at CES 2021, and it’s very different from hybrids you may have seen before. The Skagen Jorn Hybrid HR is based on the platform launched by Fossil at the end of 2019, meaning it has a low-power e-ink screen in the center of the watch face and underneath mechanical hands. Despite this, the Jorn Hybrid should still return at least two weeks use before the battery needs recharging.

There are two versions of the Jorn Hybrid HR, one with a 42mm stainless steel case and 22mm strap, and the other with a smaller 38mm stainless steel case and an 18mm strap. In total, there are five different case and strap combinations, ranging from a classic steel case and brown leather strap combo, to a gold case and mesh bracelet option.

Skagen is known for a minimalist design — just take a look at the Wear OS-powered Falster 3 for proof — and the Jorn Hybrid HR is no exception. The angled bezel is smooth, with short lugs leading down to a simple straight-edge strap. Somewhat surprisingly, there are three buttons on the case. They are needed to operate the e-ink screen, which can be customized to show different complications, an image of your choice, or nothing at all if you’d prefer a stealthier look.

The screen is just one of the updates that makes the Jorn Hybrid HR more useful than older hybrid smartwatches. It has a heart rate sensor on the back, so it It also has automatic workout detection, and will automatically end your workout, too.

What else? The Jorn Hybrid HRwill display notifications from your phone on the e-ink screen, increasing its ability beyond hybrids without any screen at all. It is water-resistant to 30 meters, and has features including a stopwatch, an alarm, and music controls. It also makes use of GPS on your phone if you want to track a run or cycle ride. The battery is expected to last around two weeks, but this will depend on your use. When it does come time to recharge it, the fast charger takes it to 80% in 50 minutes.

The Skagen Jorn Hybrid HR will be available through Fossil’s own online store soon, and will cost $195. This price is lower than the majority of touchscreen smartwatches, but still above some of the cheaper options such as the Amazfit GTR 2.
