This alarm clock app takes ‘I woke up like this’ selfies to a whole new level

It’s 7 a.m. — time to wake up. But first, let me take a selfie.

The app we’ve all been waiting for — if you’re an insufferable morning person — is finally here. It’s called Snap Me Up and it’s only on Android. The app functions as an alarm clock that can only be disabled by taking a selfie. Nobody looks their best when they just wake up, though some of us look better than others. The free Android app uses facial recognition to make sure we aren’t just taking pictures of our cats or teddy bears, but indeed of our own exhausted, unenthused faces. Once you’ve taken a selfie, the alarm turns off.

We all know that feeling we get when our alarm goes off in the morning. It’s a mix of hate, resentment, confusion, and perhaps gratitude that we have something to get up for. But no matter the emotion, it’s never pleasant to be awoken. For years, we’ve been sold on gentler ways to raise us from our slumber. Everything from simple rainfall noises, to devices designed to wake you when you are in your lightest stages of sleep, but Snap Me Up brings vanity into the equation.

The true purpose of this app isn’t to create an alarm clock that is necessarily more effective than any other. The beauty of this app is obviously in the saved gallery of “I just woke up” faces you’ll have to share with your friends and on your social media pages. Imagine a good-morning text before school from all your friends sending their sleepy faces and you sending yours. Snap Me Up really takes the “constantly there” idea of modern technology and social media to your bedroom! Wait … is that creepy?

If you’re not completely freaked out by the idea, you can download the app for free on the Google Play store.

Currently, AT&T has its “Next Up” add-on, which has been available for the past several years. This program costs $6 extra per month and lets you upgrade by trading in your existing phone after at least half of it is paid off. But the new Next Up Anytime option gives you some more flexibility.

The Nokia 3210 is the worst phone I’ve used in 2024
A person holding the Nokia 3210, showing the screen.

Where do I even start with the Nokia 3210? Not the original, which was one of the coolest phones to own back in a time when Star Wars: Episode 1 -- The Phantom Menace wasn’t even a thing, but the latest 2024 reissue that has come along to save us all from digital overload, the horror of social media, and the endless distraction that is the modern smartphone.

Except behind this facade of marketing-friendly do-goodery hides a weapon of torture, a device so foul that I’d rather sit through multiple showings of Jar Jar Binks and the gang hopelessly trying to bring back the magic of A New Hope than use it.
The Nokia 3210 really is that bad
