Solio Magnesium Lets the Sunshine In

The UK’s Better Energy Systems has announced the availability of its newest hybrid solar charger, the Solio Magnesium Edition. The new model features a magnesium shell and an integrated lithium ion battery that can store power for up to one year. But neither of those are the Solio’s signature feature: the unit can convert an hour of direct sunlight into as much as 25 minutes of cell phone talk time or 50 minutes of music playback on a typical MP3 player. And the new model has a maximum output of 8 watts, more than three times higher than previous models.

“Better Energy Systems is the leader in the eco-mobility market,” said company CEO and Founder, Christopher Hornor. “To maintain that position it was necessary to advance our technology while remaining true to our core beliefs. This resulted in our most powerful, and efficient model yet – the Magnesium Edition, which is also carbon neutral. “

The Solio units work by using fan-fold solar panels to charge the internal lithium ion battery. (The units can also be charged from a wall socket—but that’s not very green now, is it?) Users can then use the stored power to charge up their mobile devices like cell phones, portable media players, digial cameras, game devices, GPS units, and more. The unit can be adapted to a wide range of devices using iGo adapter tips. The Solios are designed to be rugged and easily transportable, so folks can easily carry them around whether they’re dedicated urbanites or adventure travelers exploring remote (but sunny!) regions.

The Solio Magnesium Edition carries a suggested retail price of $199, although retailers like REI are offering it for about $170.

I let a ChatGPT app take over my phone’s keyboard, and it was wild
The ParagraphAI keyboard generating an automated reply to a Telegram message.

We're still in the early days of 2023, but if there's any major tech story from the year that'll be the most memorable, it'll be the incredible rise of ChatGPT. After the original ChatGPT app rose to fame in late 2022, it's become increasingly popular this year — most recently, with Microsoft integrating ChatGPT into Bing.

But it's not just Microsoft that's using ChatGPT. A company called ParagraphAI used ChatGPT to create an "AI writing app" that uses artificial intelligence to reply to your texts, emails, Twitter DMs, and more. Gone are the days of having to manually type out messages yourself – just make the AI do it! But is it any good? I've been testing the ParagraphAI app on my iPhone, and it's been a wild experience ... for a few different reasons.

This major Apple bug could let hackers steal your photos and wipe your device

Apple’s macOS and iOS are often considered to be more secure than their rivals, but that doesn’t make them invulnerable. One security team recently proved that by showing how hackers could exploit Apple’s systems to access your messages, location data, and photos -- and even wipe your device entirely.

The discoveries were published on the blog of security research firm Trellix, and will be of major concern to iOS and macOS users alike, since the vulnerabilities can be exploited on both operating systems. Trellix explains that Apple patched the exploits in macOS 13.2 and iOS 16.3, which were released in January 2023, so you should update your devices as soon as you can.
