Up to this point, PlayStation phone rumors have mostly been based on some leaked photos and quite a few “No comment”s from Sony. Now, Sony Ericsson’s CEO seems to be weakening.
“There’s a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be fire somewhere,” CEO Bert Nordberg said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, regarding the phone. It’s widely accepted at this point that the smartphone will run on Android, feature a slide-out controller, and carry Sony Ericsson’s Xperia label.
In the interview, Nordberg also alluded to some sort of release this February, as the WSJ reported “he wants to make a lot of ‘noise’ at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona…”. Is this prompting PlayStation fans to get ready for the phone’s release in just a few months?
It’s possible – or Sony is getting ready to launch a completely different product and just wants to create a little buzz for itself. But the interview definitely revealed that the company is focused on mobile gaming, and improving the user experience. Nordberg claimed smartphone options at the moment aren’t built with gaming in mind, and that touchscreens alone don’t quite cut it. He also mentioned that “Sony has an extremely strong offering in the gaming market, and that’s very interesting.”
Interesting indeed, but not as interesting as if you’d just tell us you’re making a phone. Still, this is some pretty strong hinting at the device’s development, so keep watch for more confirmation of a PlayStation smartphone.
